Depreciating value of LR
 

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted; great to see that you're all still into this hobby (with many newcomers too!)

After a couple years of being into this hobby, I've lost interest and can't manage to keep up with maintaining my tank. It's ridden with a some aiptasia and a buttload of GHA. I can clean and pull off as much GHA as I can, so that's not as big of a concern.

I want to sell all my livestock and rock, but my question is this:

How much is liverock's value affected when you sell it with aiptasia?

Aiptasia infested live rock is a deal killer for me unless I'm willing to cook the rocks for months to get rid of these pests.

Once they get into your display tank, its a real PITA to eradicate all of them.

I'm going to be blunt. If, and I'm not saying you are by any means, a seller of such aiptasia covered LR is sneaky and dishonest then such a seller could easily sucker a newbie into paying market price for the LR. However, a more experienced reefkeeper would know what to look for and what questions to ask and would not pay very much for the LR at all.

As with everything for sale, it's caveat emptor.

This says it all. People will pay what they want, and some people can be suckered.

You could probably sell it to a newbie who has no clue for like $6/lb on Kijiji or Craigslist, but personally I'd be looking for a $3/lb deal because I know that rock would take a significant amount of time to get into what I would consider usable condition.

Moogled isn't a sneaky con artist...

Anyway, dry it out, scrub it down and sell it as base rock.

As Albert has said, I definitely would not trick anyone, newbie or advanced, into buying this rock. I'll be providing a warning to those who would be interested in buying it.

Since I'm a student, I'm trying to recoup as much of the cost as I can while I take the tank down, so I'm looking for the price which rock of this condition would normally be sold at.

I'll add some photos just for reference.

I don't think anyone meant to suggest that. I personally would have looked at rock with aiptasia a year ago and said "Oh, cool, anemones!" :wink:

Hope you get a decent price for your rock... I know how hard it is being a student :lol:. Are you going out of the hobby completely, or planning a 'college nano'?

I am in the hobby since 1998 and had a few tanks and always new live rock.
If I ever will set up a new tank I will start with DRY ROCK ONLY.

The reason is pests ! and I mean bad ones will be there. mantis shrimp is NOT the worst. Bobbitt worm is the worst pest IMO.

This beast will eat everything and anything, corals , small fish, mushrooms zoos, LPS. It is a nightmare.
I got rid of one and I have another one growing. this thing is so strong it moves small rocks and pulls staff under rocks ! It's very smart too and hard to catch, if you make your move and miss you will never have a second chance to try in the same way.
Well any way live rock is not worth it because bacteria will grow during first few month and whatever may be still alive on the new live rock you can buy later for cheep.
