Vertex 180 Skimmer - Noisy again
Bought a Vertex 180 Skimmer in February and before long it seemed to get noisier than upon initial set up. Called the supplier about 2 months ago and they immediately sent out a new impeller shaft that was an upgrade. It seemed to do the trick, but the last few days the unit seems to be as noisy as it was before the replacement. Do I need to clean the shaft and motor unit every month or so, and is that the cause of the higher-than-expected running noise level?

I don't think there's much you can do. It's one of the compromises of the cheap Resun pump. You can't expect the world for what that skimmer sells for. Part of what you pay for with a BK, for example, is the silence.

Pull out the impeller and take a snap of the shaft if you could, especially the ends.

cleaning the pump once a month wouldn't hurt either, I used to do all my pumps once aq month and they did get louder if I left them for a while longer.

Attached is a pic of new and old impeller units
Impeller at bottom of pic is the newer one. They look identical at a glance. In any case, the unit does not appear dirty or anything, but still sounds louder than the first month......hey, perhaps it's just me but has anyone else noticed this?

i have a vertex in-100 and i find it quite loud. from what i hear its the resun pump. i like the skimmer just not the noise

It a known problem with the Vertex, there was a bad batch of impellers. If you pull off the shaft from the impeller you will see wear marks on the shaft and the bore of the impeller will be ovaled out, this causes the impeller to vibrate. Replacing the shaft with a worn impeller does not help as it wills still vibrate. Contact the mfg, they will give you a new impeller. I have the ph number around here, the distributer is in Richmond, B.C.
