Who posted the pic of the green and gold clam?
I can't find the OP, but there was a photo posted quite a while back of a clam, gold rimmed on the edge of the mantle with a turquoise or green inner. I seem to remember the photo being taken by somebody's father while diving?
There were some other amazing photos in the thread too, but... I'm looking to get a pic of that clam so I can attempt to find one like it. |

Thats awesome, what a great color combo. Let me know if you have any luck tracking one down.

Sorry to be a raincloud here, but the yellow in that photo is not the mantle, that's the algae on the shell...
|
Ya, if that's the correct photo the yellow is the shell sticking out...though I'm not sure it's algae??
|
Well, algae or whatever. Coraline or maybe some kind of boring (ie., drilling, not as in "uninteresting") algae. Ordinarily clam shell is white on its own, but it doesn't take long for stuff to grow on it..

Thanks lorenzo, that's the one
And now that I look closer, Delphinus may be right... but if you look at the way the yellow meets the edge of the shell (and sort of overlays it, like an extended mantle would) I don't think so. I'll study the pic a little more later (though that won't exactly be definitive) but if you look at the second scallop on the bottom of the clam, you can see the edge of the shell peeking out from behind the mantle. Edit: Still, you're probably right. I guess I'll just have to mention that I don't want a flat blue clam when I order one. |
What you are seeing is just the next rows of scutes. :) The mantle just isn't extended past the shell in this photo - could possibly be pulled in because of the photographer actually - they pull in quickly if they notice shadows and so on.
But I understand what you're saying. There are some really amazing patterns on clams out there. There very likely are clams with this sort of pattern on their mantles. Some eye candy for you.. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...readid=1290440 http://canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=41367& Enjoy :) |
I took this in Palau, it's kind of yellow on the edges.

Thanks Delph, I have looked at the photo some more and agree. The edges of the scutes are probably just worn down for whatever reason. Thanks for the links also, I'm now convinced that I can find a gold and green clam
My plan is now to have a macro / LPS / clam tank. We'll see how it goes. |
