uv sterilizers
i am looking at going 80% sps i my new tank.
is any one running a uv sterilizer on their tank. whats the pros/cons of haveing one? thanks for the time. |
I'm running one, and like it, but I tend to keep adding stuff so I figure the UV sterilizer may kill anything the new fish or corals bring with them. If I just kept the tank as is I would probably shut it down sooner or later.

I run one in my fresh water tank...I bought it after fighting a losing battle with an algae bloom and within 48 hours the water was crystal clear and has been ever since. Pricey, but well worth it it for me.
|
Pros:
-Helps clear up some parasite and algae issues Cons: -Is not a panacea for all parasite and algae issues -Requires regular cleaning and maintenance or it will lose effectiveness -Often undersized/underpowered relative to tank size -Replacement bulbs (which are essential) are usually quite expensive -May kill some planktonic foods that corals and other inverts feed on |
I originally pruchased one when my tank was stocked with mostly SPS. This was after suggestions that it would protect/prevent RTN which had happened to me a few times previous to getting the UV. I don't know whether it actually prevents RTN because after purchasing it I started to get out of SPS.
