How long can you keep your flame scallop?
Hes the newest addition of my tank, he is inexpensive but gorgeous thing to look at. I have couple questions: how long you guys can keep it? and does he sting my coral because couple of his tentacles is touching my rics but I can see any sign of burnt. here are couple of pix that I took with my cellphone:

Should probably be pretty resistant to stings... I'd baby it the same way as most baby their clams though; that is, I would move it somewhere else. As for how long people keep them for, that depends on whether or not they know how/what to feed the things. Flame scallops are not photosynthetic and will die without daily feedings of phyto and really small stuff; so I do hope you're ready to do that. On that note, I'm no pro when it comes to scallops but Id say yours is gaping like mad; i think it's hungry.

Hmm
Are they photosynthetic (Lol to lazy to go to the link)? Has it moved around for you, I've watched these things scoot around the tank flapping there little clam hands, pretty cool though.

its never moved on me, still in the same place that i put it since i got it.
so far so good, knock on wood!!!! |
I bought one once when I was just starting out for my 50gal (bad impulse purchase). I fed Kent phytoplex and microvert a few times per week... the food succeeded only in polluting my tank. The scallop starved to death within a few weeks/months. I dont really recall.
I've also watched our LFS bring a few in recently and house them in a 135gal store display. The ones that didnt sell died of starvation after a few months. As have all of the other non photosynthetic filter feeders they've had that they couldnt sell. Sorry to be a downer but they began opening very wide like that just before they died too so I'd be concerned if I were you that it is not finding enough to eat. |
