Clam ID
I got this from a guy taking down his Nano and have no idea on the ID. Help?

Going by the pattern/color, smooth spares scutes it almost looks like a gigas or possibly a derasa. Can't really tell by the picture but also the lack of tentacles around the inhalant aperture are also another indicator of these two types. What size is it ? Looks like good potential :)

Looks very much like a derasa.
|
looks to be a gigas, not a nano friendly clam.
how big is your tank?? |
Tank is a 75 gallon. The clam is about 3.5" right now. It was in a 8 gallon cube with a large true perc, blue spot goby and six line wrasse. I bought it off the guy because he was moving, lucky find for me...and the live stock

Interesting to see little blue dots if it is a derasa, that does make it look vaguely giga-ish, but the shell and the way the mantle sits looks more derasa-ish to me. I babysat a gigas about a year ago, you'd think I could remember how scutey the shell was, but noooooooooo. I can't remember at all. Argh!
Anyhow, what I really meant to point out to you is you may want to pry off that vermetid snail (tubeworm thingy) on the shell to the left there. They multiply like crazy and will drive you (and your corals, and your clams) nuts with the little spiderweb fishing nets they use to catch passing detritus. |
Do you have any side shots of the clam? I am leaning towards derasa for the ID, but I need another photo.
Even if it is a gigas, they grow relatively slow. |
Here is a side shot. I think that snail is dead because I've never seen anything come out from it...I'll pry it off anyway though.
