Return pump question

Hi,

I'm thinking of putting a Mag 3 pump for my return outside of the sump. The pump would be below the sump water level, but fed by a pipe that goes up and over the rim. Will it create the suction needed to pull water over and prime itself? Or is it necessary to drill the sump?

Thanks,
Nevin

You'd have to prime it initially, but after that it should create the same siphon effect like a u-tube overflow to obviate the need to re-prime as long as the sump's water level stays above pump.

The bigger problem I see is that some Mags leak over time when run externally. Some people are fine, but you should test yours first.

I am doing the exact same thing, but am drilling the sump. I know about MAG's leaking. I have run one for 4 years on my computer. Yes, computer. It's water cooled :D. Best advice, pull the 4 screws that hold the cap on, spread a thin layer of silicone on the O ring and re assemble. Then, apply a nice bead of silicone around the seam. Mag's are cheap enough that if it leaks in a couple years, or gets full of slime and gunk in the rotor, just buy a new one :D

Also, mags will suck, after tube is primes, but will be a pain, and they loose efficiency when they have to suck water

Sounds like I'd do better to just run it inside the sump. I was just thinking to reduce heat in the tank, but I don't anticipate problems with heat anyway.

Is there a more reliable pump for the money? If the Mags aren't totally reliable then I'd rather spend half as much for a powerhead--I only need 2-300GPH at 2' head.

Thanks,
Nevin

main reason I am removing my Mag from sump is heat. I have 3 pumps in the water. 2 n sump, 1 in overflow and the heater barely works. Acctually wants to overshoot when I turn the T5's on. Plus, its just that much more volume it takes up :D

Personally, I'm partial to Eheims. The do cost more, but I think their worth it since they are designed to be run externally, use much less electricity and are bulletproof. A 1048 would be appropriate for your application.

The simplest option is perhaps running something like a Quietone internally. Mags are notrious for running extremely hot.

I was just looking at the Quietone 1200. Anyone know where to buy and how much in the Vancouver area? Maybe King Ed?

I've got a Mag3 (external) on my Ca reactor. Brand new right from the box it weeped slightly from the housing. A very thin smear of silicone on the o-ring cured it.

As for temperature, mine runs 24/7 and I just put my hand on it. Could say warm, it definitely wasn't hot. Do you have some concerns with your system for temperature?

For having external vs internal, way easier and neater plumbing wise just to place in the sump (if heats not a issue). That way also you're not having to worry about priming, airlocks etc.
