burn all your photos and documents n everything on CD's/DVD's then do a factory restore. It wipes it completely clean then reinstalls everything new. you press an Fkey during boot up (different for different brands). That'll make it run like new again.

but it's something you can't restore so make sure you backup EVERYTHING you need first.

A bit of a drastic solution, but it will work when everything else fails. If you aren't computer inclined, then I would try an anti-spyware program like ADAWARE first, just to see if that helps. In the end, nothing will speed it up quite as well as Kwirky's suggestion, but remember you need to know all your passwords, etc before you wipe it clean.

Get a Mac and set yourself free. Had my laptop for 2 years. Never had a virus (don't even have virus protection) and when you open it up and turn it on it's ready to go in about 15 seconds.

I can't say that I can ever suggest a MAC...after doing tech support for both PC and MAC, I would continue to go PC every time. MAC may fail less often (marginally) but when they do, they go down hard!

Just my opinion though...I'm sure AL didn't want this to be a Mac - PC debate...lol

Is the problem when you launch a program is takes for ever to open or even with programs are open they run really slow?

Do a search for a couple of freeware programs - ccleaner and easycleaner.

This will clean out your registry, temporary files, duplicate files etc. Then do a defrag. You should notice a big improvement.

All good suggestions so far. Spyware and other junk programs can cause these types of problems. Also, many people who start their computers up and shut them down often will find that there are a variety of updates trying to happen: MS updates, Java updates, Virus scans to run, google desktop indexing... sometimes, just leaving it on for a day or so will bring things back to a bit of equilibrium.

If your hard drive is too full, your computer may not be able to use memory efficiently through swapping. Check available space. Also, if your habits have changed, and you're now running several programs simultaneously, consider upgrading your RAM.

Toolbars in your browser can also cause problems in some cases. Usually I try to strip some of those out of the equation.

Lots of people get a new computer with Norton or another "security suite" installed on a time-limited offer. Some of these are quite resource intensive. Worse, some people let those expire and install another anti-virus program without uninstalling the original program correctly or completely. If you have a resource-constrained system, consider switching to a product like AVG or the excellent AVAST.

Delete all temporary files from all your temp directories.

Ok I'll look at some of these solutions ,not the hammer stage yet, but thanks for all the imput from everyone.
