Haing trouble finding 400watt metal halides
I keep finding 250 watts I was going to use Lumen ma but I don't know if they hae 400watt Anyone know where I can find some ? Also do you think the pendants or a longer light would be a better choice for a 48" tank ? asherah |
Still can't send you pm's.....can you turn them back on...I need to ask you something:)
Thanks |
Uhhh, if by "Lumen ma" you mean "Lumenmax" then those are reflector pendants that don't have anything to do with wattage.
MH setups basically have 3 separate components: ballast, bulb, reflector. A "400W" MH setup uses a 400W ballast driving a 400W bulb underneath a reflector (no wattage). I believe your trouble is that you won't find any pre-packaged 400w MH systems like Coralife's Aqualights, for example. That's because the market for 400w systems is quite small. The most the vast majority of reefers require is 250w. So you have to put together your own a la carte from outfits like Hamilton and PFO. You can do this at pretty much any dedicated SW LFS like J&L: http://www.jlaquatics.com/phpstore/s...ct_ID=pfo-hr48 |
I was talking about these
http://oceanencounter.com/Merchant2/...egory_Code=PEN I can only find 250watts  asherah |
check for the "2s" they can handle 400W

it only takes mogul Is that bad ? I always heard DE's were better
The tank is 36" deeps (wow) so I was wanting 400watts asherah |

Okay we'll.....have you picked up this tank? As after reading through your thread on upgrading last night i got an email yesterday morning from the guy who is selling your tank telling me it is still available...Soooo if you haven't picked it up you might want to talk with him as he is still trying to sell it... The email i got showes the same pic as the one you had posted on your thread. Just thought i would give you the heads up:) |

That's only the reflector - nothing else. And Mark is correct, the Lumenmax 2 is the new model that can HANDLE 400w MHs. You'll need to get ballasts and bulbs as well. I run Lumenmax 2 reflectors. There's nothing wrong with mogul (aka SE). In fact, you get more light out of SE bulbs because they don't require an extra glass shield that DE bulbs do. Some people prefer DE because the glass shield is easier to clean and the bulbs are smaller. |
Plus, with 400w DE, you'll be very limited in your bulb choices since most makers don't have 400w DE bulbs available, whereas they all make the 250w version which as Fkshiu wrote, is by far the most popular among reefers.
