Anyone seen the bags of live sand at Big Al's ? Been needing some for my 33g - never did get any when I changed from crushed coral to sand. Just wondering if it's worth the money or try to get some from a good established bed.

How much is it for a bag? If you need some more sand anyways, and are in a hurry for bacteria to get established throughout, then maybe go for it.

If you have enough sand, maybe get a couple lbs "live" from SWC or local source that's full of all of what you need. I've heard good things about the variety of critters from the LS at SWC and I think he has it on sale for the rest of January.

Yea their price for Big Al's live sand is rediculious. Like in the $50-$60 dollar range for a bag :roll:

If you've got good live rock sitting on top of dead sand, it'll become live sand soon enough. :wink:

You might look at past posts. We have talked about sand a lot, and there are lots of options such as Pool Sand, glass beads, Carib Sea Aragonite from the LFS, and so forth. I don't think we need to start the thread all over again. :D

Seriously, Mitch's advice is excellent. A good mix of aragonite sizes for the bed, and quality (cured) live rock for the seeding. All the good critters from bacteria on up find their way into the sand and populate it.

Expensive, but excellent. :wink:
