aqualight pro series broken glass

Hey folks:

Idiot that I am, I broke one of the pieces of glass that shields the MH double-ended bulb from the water. My question is, can I get another piece of glass cut to the same dimensions or does it have to be special in some way? Does it act as a shield for radiation from the light as well and hence need to have certain qualities, or will any glass do?

Thanks, folks

IMO I think the glass acts as more of a shield to protect the bulbs from water splashes/spray. So I would think that as long as you got as piece of glass cut to the same size and thickness you should be fine. But like I said that's just my opinion.

It has to be tempered glass due to the amount of heat it will endure. It also acts as UV shielding.

Do not run that bulb without the glass shielding. You will be exposing your corals and fish to extremely high levels of UV and likely kill them or do significant harm in a matter of minutes. Make sure you get a new piece of glass right away

I heard the samething as Christy. I think it's special glass with a UV filter.

As far as I know all glass filters UV. Thats why you won't get a tan in your car with the windows rolled up

Definitely get the tempered though, it will be exposed to really high temps.

thanks

thanks for the help, folks. I won't run the light without the glass.

Yeah, just regular "clear float" glass is all you need. There's no special glass for UV, just any old glass. Check the thickness of the old and get the same.

Agreed just regular glass, tempered glass doesn't help with heat issues, besides the one that broke didn't break into a million pieces did it ?
I would use the broken glass for now if you can

tempered

Yes, I don't think it was tempered. It did break into twenty or so pieces but not into the little square beads that tempered breaks into. It was shards, just like typical glass.
