Kelly Jedlicki over at the marine depot board might be able to help. She has sharks and moderates the Disease, health and wellness forum

I saw this happen in a local Big Al's store. the idiots who set up the shark tank used crushed coral (i avoid shopping there as much as possible). crushed coral is much too abrasive for sharks and the bellies were rubbed raw. one had an infection which sounds similar to what your friend's shark has. what kind of substrate is he using? how long a time is "shortly"?

That's exactly what you should be looking at first.
