Silicone
 

I've read conflicting opinions about what silicone is OK to use for doing my baffles. I bought the GE Silicone II window and door and am wondering who has experience with this one... it doesn't say anything on the packaging about anti-mildew or UV protectant, or fungiside, etc. It does say "not for surfaces that will exceed 400 deg. farenheit, conditions where FDA complience is necessary, aquariums." I would like to know what you all think? I've read some posts etc. that say it will be fine, and others that say it's not good to use. Help!
Oh, and if I use this type i am going to let it clear for many days before even putting water or anything in it.

The canadian home depot specs on GE Silicone II has nothing about the Bioseal-mold and mildew product protectant....???

just get the stuff from J&L. It's MADE for aquariums.

Don't be lazy like me, I just didn't have a car to go get it ;) Go to J&L or heck, Revy and buy the stuff that gives a thumbs up for aquariums.

Personally, I phoned GE and they stated that it won't leach any chemicals (this was for the Silicone I) but that it's not designed to support building for an aquarium... however I've known people who've had tanks running for years with no problems, using Silicone I

If you have a car and a way to get there, just do Revy, or call GE on Monday and confirm.

I used it to reseal my 135G freshwater tank 6 months ago and it works great !!! The silicone is still flexible and the fish are doing fine, so I don't think it contain fungiside?? if it does its not enough to kill my neon tetra.
I bought them in Canadian home depot.

Ok just went to Cambodian Tire and bought some "Mastercraft Silicone Window and Door"
And it says on the back "IDEAL FOR USE IN AQUARIUMS"

So I'm set..!! woot woot

I have used the GE II as well with no problems... just give it at least 24 hours to cure and the fill and flush your tank a few times.

Great thread. I've bought aquarium silicone myself from oa or other lfs in the past but have found them to be hard to work with. It would be nice to be able to buy a good size tube and use it in a silicone gun instead of squeezing a tube.

There are two types of GE Silicone II one with an anti mold and mildew and one with out, actually I guess there is four types because you can get it both in clear and white... maybe even black but I haven't seen it so it doesn't count for me.

You can buy silicone from cdn tire, that says "ideal for use in aquariums" so that there are no if ands or butts umm buts

Any silicone that is 100% silicone rubber ie; GE silicone 1 is safe for aquariums. The reason the people at Ge stated that it is not designed for building aquariums is likely because they don't want the liability of anyone flooding thier house. I'm not an expert, but I just did a pile of reaserch as I didn't want to pay $6 for a small tube at the LFS.
