help choosing software

I have been blasted with pop-ups with everything from x rated sites to warnings saying I have spyware or malware and it brings me to a download site to get rid of it.Up to today I haven't had any probs with these,so I guess I need a pop-up blocking program, what can you suggest to solve this?

I currently run mcafee and also have ad-aware,along with avg.

I use fire fox as a browser,it can be set to block pop-ups.

First You need to clean your computer with Adaware or another Spyware remover. Others can suggest the ones they think work for them. I believe it's the spyware your having problems with. Delete all your cookies that will help as well

have you updated adaware? Also, spybot search and destroy is another great program for getting rid of popups. It can be obtained from www.download.com
You need to empty your temp folders. If you're using windows xp, it can be found here.
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\Local Settings\Temp
90% of the stuff that causes popups store their files there. You can also run MSCONFIG from the start menu. If you take a screenshot of the startup tab, we can tell you what you can disable and what is good.

spybot search and destroy - as mentioned gets the majority.
Avast antivirus - will keep you from getting more (and it's ... FREE!)

I installed the Google Toolbar, which allows you to do google searches right from your browser toolbar (so handy, since I use it all the time).

But it also includes a popup killer, which can be set to block them silently, so you dont even notice it.

I turned off everything but the search and popup killer, so it's very inobtrusive. I also moved it to the same line as the File/Edit/View/etc, so it doesnt take up any additional real estate:

Well I called shaw and was told there is a pop-up virus that has been going around in the last few days and nothing out there yet is able to destroy it,short of wipping the hard drive.Looks like I'll be hooking the Mac back up tonight.
