Impossible Pond?
 

May be a dumb question but if you can keep a steady temp. in an outdoor pond, is it possible to do a salt pond??? i have done everything else in the pond....live bearors, tetras, cichlids, goldfish.... im just curious!
Any feedback is welcome!

I've thought about this myself, corals would be tough but an outdoor fish pond is possible. It would only be viable during the warmest months and you need to have a good way to deal with rain, especially run off. I have a friend who kept brackish archers on his balcony every summer. It was really neat.

ive saw a super cool salt pond when i lived in texas, it was indoor tho.

indoor would be no problem...just like a tank but you cant see in the sides!! i knew that rain would be a big problem... anyone else have anything to say about this?

I was at AI and noticed they had the large sqare holding tanks made by Hagen and was thinking the same about a salt pond.I think if you built it so it was high enough up from ground level,run-off wouldn't be a problem,and as long as you checked the salinity often,rain would be ok?
The only thing about being outside and our climate,you might want to think about a cooler salt water enviroment,something like you would find in the Atlantic ocean.You would also have to dig it deep and have a good strong airator(sp?).Sounds like a nice project though.

well, like i said, i have done everything else and next yeear want to try something odd. i think your right about the climate though, although we do get 30+ days, we can get very cold at night...also, would the rain pose a HUGE problem?

Sure... your pond would have to be covered, no? And if it were covered, it would add a lot more heat on 30+ days . But, I am not the DIY pond expert so I wouldn't even know where to begin on something like this.

(also, as mentioned.. if it rains and it enters your pond, you have to watch SG)

How big is the pond?

I don't think you could grow corals up there in Edmonton, but down here in Calgary we certainly get enough sunlight to grow even the hardest SPS.:wink:

Just a thought,would it be possable to heat the pond if it wasnt too large,or would the cost be too much? They must make larger heaters for such a thing.

I just did a search for pond heaters and came up with quite a few sites,so I guess they do.
