Making a refugium
OK I have 33g reef tank and was thinking of adding a refugium to it. I was going to use a 10g tank . Does anyone Have any tips or things I should know before I do it?
Thanks |
There is a really cool idea I saw for a good refugium I saw on reef videos.
Click the first video on the top. It's called 'sump concept". http://www.reefvideos.com/reefshowcase_04_content.html But you dont really need any of that, A screw in PC bulb from home depot and some chateo with lots of flow in the fuge is really all you need if you want good nutrient export from your fuge. |
very cool site love streaming vids.
where were you going to put it? you may want to incorporate a sump into it as well, if so go for a larger tank. if not it would be best to put the tank above or higher and have it drain into the main tank and feed it with a powerhead. Even though a 10 gallon tank is supper cheap, for that size of display tank you could buy a packpak style it would take up less room. |
well I was thinking of having it above the tank. Put some cheto in it and a small lite and that is it

i forgot to mention some/most powerheads don't have a lot of head hieght you may need to put it beside but slightly higher or buy a small pump to feed it

Going to need first what the ref is for.
There's different setups (lighting, substrate size, flow) for different proposes; vegetation, amphipods, copepod, time out for fish, etc. Depending on the use, might make more sense just to be incorporating into the sump. If for pods, slightly higher than tank seems more ideal though pump shear maybe overstated. Days worth of reading here http://www.wetwebmedia.com/refugium.htm |
experimental eh. is there anyother way. like i always say if it was easy it wouldn't be any fun. Although it would be nice to be bored once in a while .hahaha.
sound like you got a good plan. good luck |
Here's how I did it. I made it with 1/4" acrylic, and made a ledge for it to overflow into the last section of my sump. My return is Tee'd off to feed it.

I use a Maxijet900 right now & I get a decent flow into my above tank 20g. I think I might upgrade to a Maxijet1200 later.
