Hermit Crabs

Hey there,

I was just curious; how big do algea eating hermit crabs get? I've got 3 of them and they're about an inch across each (their shell that is). The reason I'm asking is whether or not I should be looking to get them some new shells.

They should not get much bigger, but I would put in some extra shells just in case. They are cheap, dont look bad, and might save some snails.

Depends on type too.
for the standerd blue leg thats close to max size
Scarlet reds get a bit bigger 2"
and the electric blue knees get pretty big 3"

I've had a pretty darn big scarlet, and I had no extra shell at the time... so he wasn't very mobile. They do get fairly large those ones... and extra shells are always a good idea.

Should it be fairly easy to tell what colour my hermits are? As in, would the blue or red be easy to see? Because, my crabs look more grey than anything (they might be a little different than grey, but my colour vocabulary doesn't extend much past ROY G BIV).

Yeah if you had the standard hermits the colors are quite obvious.
Try looking on the net to see if you can get an idea for the species

With out an ID it hard to guess what size they will get, But id say 2" is the average size.
