what hood fans are quiet ?
In my getto hood I'm running 2 ice cap fans (bought used), but I find them very noisy. I often run only one when I'm on the same level of the house (T.V in next room) I run 2 400w MH w/antics so not really a great idea. Just about finished my DIY hood and would like to try something different. Any suggestions ?

Computer Case Fans, 120mm. I use (2) Panaflo's in my hood.
I just power them each with an old AC Adapter that I found in my surplus drawer. Doesnt matter too much if the transformers are not 12V either (the fans will just be underpowered). If you do need them to run faster, then you get pick up a cheap 12V at the flea market or at London Drugs. |
Vantec Stealth and Vantec Thermoflow are pretty quiet. The Stealth is a constant speed fan but the Thermoflow is variable speed fan with a temp sensor.

Doesnt the thermistor only work when attached to a computer motherboard? The molex plug should have 3 wires, the 3rd of which is used by the computer to monitor the temperature. Usually it's not 'built in' to the fan itself to control the speed based on temperature.

I have a stealth and they work very well and are really quiet. This was expecially important because my tank is in my room where I do all of my work and everything needs to be quiet. I also know the Panaflo's are good too. Bought mine from www.ncix.com

No, most of them have a seperate resistor that sits near the fan blades. |

I got my Stealths and Thermoflows from BigFootComputers a few years ago. I think it was cheaper at SVC but for some reason I didn't order there because they didn't ship to Canada.
(80 mm) http://www.bigfootcomputers.com/Merc...Category_Code= (92 mm) http://www.svcompucycle.com/92vanthertem.html Here's a quick list of other 92x25mm fans with their ratings: http://www.svcompucycle.com/standardfans92.html The Stealths at full speed appear to be rated quieter than the Thermoflows at low speed. Hmmm. As for temp sensor, I've read before that the wire going to the motherboard is only used to provide the RPM speed to the computer. The computer doesn't control the fan speed. |
computer fans
Good place in Calgary and also reasonable price
