Humidex - it works
 

Our house is very "air-tight" and like most fellow-reefers we have humidity problems in the winter such as heavy condensation on the windows. I searched for suggestions in this site and reefcentral and came across the mention of a product (I think it was developed in Canada) called Humidex. We decided to give it a try and installed one a couple of months ago in the basement.

Am I pleased ... no more condensation on the windows ... no black molds around the window frames. With one of the windows slightly opens on the top floor and the Humidex drawing the moist air out in the basement, the air circulation also helps the tank to maintain a 8.2pH. It used to be 7.8. Best of all, no more complains from my family about humidity problem caused by my tank ..

Is it like a piece of equipment? What kind of costs are involved?

we had our house "energy efficient" inspected today. lost points for old door on the front, some insulation issues in the attic, and most of the plug/light switches. windows were a-ok.

this humidex thing sounds neat. I'll have to investigate.

Yes, that is the site.
We bought the largest model - $568 + tax
We had Humidex installed the unit for another $275 (but apparently you can do it yourself)

so what is it just a vent fan? the site doen't give much info.

I think you probably right. It can be considered as a powerful vent fan. Our house is over 2800 sq ft and the unit is able to keep the humidity down for the whole house. It turns itself off when the humidity is at the set level, and when on, the noise is lower than my Euroreef CS8-2 pump.

where can you get a cheap humidity meter? I don't really know where to look, tried Canadian Tire but they had a whole big setup, and wasn't cheap.

Gools - Hydrometers aren't cheap. You can get good one from places that sell Marine equipments (expensive though). LeeValley sells "unmounted" hydrometer for $10.95 - it is for woodworkers who want to build their own boxes.
