cleaning silicone from glass
 

Got a leaky 33g Hagen. If I can seal it, thinking about using it for a ref and trying different overflow techniques.

I've removed all visible silicone from inside but wondering what to use as a solvent to ensure I can get a good bead of caulk down?

try goo gone, if you don't have that, canadian tire or similar places should have silicone dissolving stuff.

I don't know about solvent in the tank but a razorblade gets most of the old silicone off :biggrin:

Got the silicone off with a Olfa blades but seems like there's a greasy residue left.

Use a vinegar and water mix. That should help remove the gunk.

If you don't want to use a solvent (and I don't think you do), then try some low heat and/or a bit of friction (a chamois and some elbow grease has worked for me). If you use a hair dryer or such, be very careful not to get it too hot. If you overheat the glass it can crack when cooling.

I've done that in combination with a new razor blade and it works nicely.

Straight Vinegar, kinda works or at least works in a pinch.

Or Acetic Acid, Glacial.

Vinegar will not work to get the greasy layer off a large amount of glass. Been there, tried that.

Vinegar and water with razor blades and a towl combined with some elbow grease has always worked for me
