On my sump i have the intake pipe then there is a large baffle (with a couple bubble traps? ( pieces of glass) then the other large piece of glass where water fows under then to the filter floss and over it back to the pump. (sorry no pic at the moment)

My ??'s are how often should i replace the filter floss or be rinsing it out ?

also if i want to do a refuge what do I have to do. I have not found a lot of info on it or am not sure on it's setup??

please and thanks

Rinse out the filter floss really well at least once a week to prevent the filtered particulate from decomposing, causing Nitrate.

A refugium is a seperate tank (or seperate area of the sump) that is setup to house lit macro algae's and/or "live sand" to aid you in overall tank filtration. They are very easy to setup. Try and google some pictures and descriptions and you will get some good info that will get you started.

I change mine out ar least twice/week. Even then its dirty. If the crap is left in there, its still the same as being in the tank.

It also depends on the density of the filter media. I use a very course media just for trapping bubbles, it gets a lot more flow through it than floss so It doesn't clog as fast. I find that there is more flow though it thus, more break down by critters and bacteria. I still rinse it weekly.
