can anyone babysit a rabbit?

Have to find a temporary home for my rabbit. Was wondering if anyone would be able to watch her for me? I'm 5 months pregnant and my doctor said my baby might not be progressing properly due to Wendy's litter and my close proximity to her cage during the day and night.

She's an 11 month old holland lop rabbit, female, has a cage, litter box, 2 food dishes (one for pellets, one for hay), water bottle, and a toy. She requires a few hours a day out of her cage to exercise in a safe room. Bunny proofing is almost like baby proofing, just need to be more careful of cords.

I can provide all neccessary food, litter, hay, treats, etc. As well as a $100 babysitting payment on June 1st, until August 1st. The latest I'd need her watched is hopefully September.

I'm in Calgary, in the SW, she's currently staying with my MIL in the SE, but will arrange for her and her items to be either delivered or picked up (will supply gas money for that too).

If possible, let me know. :) Thanks.

well, I am soon to be married and we plan on having kids asap. We have a rabbit as well... What were the reasonings the doctor said it was bad to be near a rabbit?

Thanks for any info you can provide..

Its not the Rabbit itself, its the ammonia in the urine that is bad for women that are pregnat

We are now 6 months in expecting our 4th child and have 2 rabbits and a cat, i do all the litter changes so she doesnt have to

they are only worried about the litter changes, everything else is ok

Its in regards to the bacteria that occurs in the litter box from feces and urine. The bacteria when inhaled/ingested in certain amounts can cause deformities and growth problems particularly in the 1st and 2nd trimester when development and cell differentiation is occuring.

really? It makes sense when you think about it.. I will have to keep this in mind.. Is it something you should do the moment you plan to get pregnant. Should she avoid picking the bunny up? etc etc? what about a dog or bird?

We have lots of animals

michika 06-01-2005 05:11 PM

The animals themselves are fine; its their feces and urine that you should be worried about. Just don't pick up/clean up litter or droppings and you should be fine.

In Med we're all taught the reasons behind WHY you shouldn't touch/clean etc animal feces and urine when pregenant. After being taught the information many people present it in different ways. 1 individual might demand that expecting parents get ride of the animal, while another suggests not touching/cleaning up after them. When in doubt, a second opinion or even a third plus some research of your own is always in your best interest.
