thinking of trying out linux again
a friend of mine sent me a link for a version of linux that runs off a bootable cd called puppy.
here is the link http://www.goosee.com/puppy/index.shtml has anyone tried this and have any comments about it? I figure this will be a good way for me to get used to linux befor I actualy do a install of it. Steve |
easy to use, but if your going to the hassle of it, just install a full version on a POS computer and play with it there
|
All I can say is all Linux version are good but if you want something that would run from a CD i'll suggest slax

Either Suse Live - www.suse.com
We use Suse for our servers at work, I use it at home for my server. And I use it on my laptop at work. or the big rage for desktop right now is Ubuntu... http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ You can actually order 10 (minimum) CD's for free (no shipping charges) They have a live edition to try aswell. Suse is what we use on our servers atm as well, altho we are leaning towards gentoo now.
Suse personal sux, you are missing tons of libraries and such, if you ever wish to install anything not included in the personal edition, expect to spend days getting all the libraries installed. knoppix is my fave for desktops. http://www.knoppix.org/ cool bootable cd, support for all my hardware... |
Do you have some online servers in your 'Sources config' in Yast? I've never had a problem installing software from outside sources.. My laptop is Suse 9.3 Pro, I have everything (and more) I had with WindowsXp. I even use Crossover Office for some applications I need from Windows...

Last time I used suse personal was 9.1.
It wouldn't install mozilla, firefox or thunderbird until I spent HOURS installing libraries and such. Yast? it's great. At the time I was using 9.1 personal though, it would not install anything. I'll admit to only installing 9.1 personal once and that's it. I got really upset, popped in knoppix and it worked without any effort... haven't looked back :) |
well after the trouble I have been havign with my computer I might be switching sooner than I though, I don't know if it is a vrius or a hardware problem but my computer randomly reboots when I click something with the mouse or when I try to run a update or vrius check.. give me a page fault error saying vdnt32.sys is to blame.
I bought one of thoes cases that turns a hard drive into an external USB drive so I am going to pop it out and use my laptop to scan it. if not virus then I start looking at hardware I guess. Steve |
