What is gmail?

Gmail is Google's version of hotmail. A free email account with 1 gig of available memory for you to use. It's probably why hotmail was forced to provide expanded memory to all its clients. I too have 40 invitations if anyone wants one.

how do u guys get those invitations?

Once you're on they periodically send you more invitations to give away to friends & family. I guess they want to add people as they add server space.
