Questions about refugiums

Ok I have a 40 gal sump and a 62 gal main tank, What size would you good people here on Canreef recommend for a refug.

I'm thinking of a 20 gal tha i ahve laying around, now i have to drill the tank. I havea small powerhead that i have for the in put and i thought about a 3/4 bulkhead or a 1/2 bulk head for the return.

any offers if this sounds right. I thought about using a rubbermaid container a clear one say a 5 gal or should i even bother......

I'd go with a 20g refugium since it's 24" length will make it that much easier to get a standard lighting system on it (PC, T-5s, NO). It'll also give you more room to grow plants & such. Best of all, you already have the tank sitting there waiting to be used

Id go as big as you can afford or have space for. It will add water volume which makes the tank more stable and allows for more macro or anything else you wanted to put in it.

Dido Sean's idea... bigger is better

No sand in mine. Just some rock and a ball of chaeto.

No sand in mine either...
Lots of rubble, a couple crabs, cheato and halimeda.

Hey Mike,

I agree with Rich and Muck. You don't really need sand and your really don't have enough surface area on your 20G to make an effective DSB. Just pack it with live rock and rubble and a bunch of Macro. If you aquascape it nicely you can show it off too

My fuge is a mess, with algae growing everywhere.... definately something you don't want to show off to other people. Gives the pods plenty of food, and hiding spots though

that’s pretty much what a successful fuge should look like.
