Q about duty tax
K, I'm going down to Portland to visit my sis.. and being that Oregon has NO sales tax I thought about buying myself a new electric guitar, but if I bring this back will there be the same considerable duty tax slapped on?

if you stay longer than 48 hours you can have a once a year exemption of 800 bucks i belive from duty. you will still have to pay GST and possibly PST ontop.. plus 23% exchange so i guess it had better be a pretty good deal.

48 hours gets you an 500 bucks exemption as many times a year as you want.
it is now 72 hours for the once a year 800.00 Steve |
Actually the correct numbers are $200 for a 48 hour visit and $750 for over 7 days.
Here is the Canada Customs web site with the information you need. http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/hongkon....asp#Returncda |
These days most anything you bring back from the US is only subject to PST and GST. Duty, for the most part is a thing of the past (alcohol and tobacco being the obvious exemptions). If the item falls under the favored nation status it is duty free. Thankfully these days, the global economy has allowed most countries that we buy products from to fall under that category.
I go to Bellingham quite often, and all I do is declare whatever I bought and just have to pay the tax. I actually prefer to shop there, not just because of our stronger dollar, but the fact that the US has a much better selection of goods. |
