Want to add more rock. Concequences??

Hey everyone.

I wanted to add about 20 more # of LR to my system. It has 35# now (it's 33 gallon)and all the parameters are as they whould be. Ammonia, nitrates, nitrites are at 0 ph is 8.4 salinity 1.023, calcium 440

Question is if I do add LR that is suposed to be cured (that's waht lfs said) what kind of an effect will that have on my whole aquarium? I do not want to go through another cycle because of fish and few corals that I have.

Someone help me out.

Marko

PS: I can't cure rock myself because I just don't have money to buy another skimmer right now for it.

Marko,

You may end up with a very short cycle. Especially as the rock will be out of the water for a period of time. Unles syou set up a curing tank of your own and re cured it for a bit..

If you were adding a few lbs at a time I woudl not worry too much.. 20 lbs you will probably get some sort of a mini cycle..

Hello Marko,

If you can minimize the amount of time the rock is left outside of water, then you should have almost zero re-curing time.

Basically, if you treat your lr like corals, then you can add all the new lr you want

Marko, if you want I have a curing vat set up. You could get raw rock and cure it in my tub before putting it in your system. My curing tub has a skimmer, heater and light.

Marko,

I would either add single small pieces one at a time a week or so apart, or take Troy up on his offer so to minimize any cycle that adding 60% more rock in not a very large volume of water would create. If the rock has been in the LFS tank for a while, maybe ask for a water sample, if the sample reads zeros then you know the rock should be OK. It will then all depend on how long it takes to get it home. If you could have a water cooler full of preheated water in your car, you could buy the rock and have it back into water immediately and should be able to aviod much of a cycle.
