Grocery store oysters in reef tank?
I came across some weirdness on the interweb about people keeping grocery store oysters in there sump to "clean" the water.....
Has anyone heard of this? Would they be removing nutrient causing detritus or live fauna that other corals benefit from? An interesting idea but I'm sceptical |
along the same lines as keeping ornamental clams, mangroves, caulerpras... filter feeders, uptake of nitrates, organics, phosphates... etc
though id imagine grocery store oysters are cold water creatures, so not a good idea. |
yep
worked for a seafood company,,,,, got a bunch of abalone from them,,, put them in my tank,,, they rolled over and poached..
If you try it ,,, I suggest temp acclimation very ,, very fricking slow... Quote:

Tried it a couple times. They'll live for a few weeks looking great. Eventually, they succumb and die off one by one. This may or may not be a big deal depending on your bristleworm and hermit population. It's often easier to just look for ornamental oysters like honeycomb and thorneys.
