light placement on my tank

Ok here is my problem what is the best way to run my lights on the 36" tank.

the lenght of the tank with the bulb.

or the width of the tank with the bulb.
the reason is i have a 24" reflector and its PFO and would hate to cut it unless i had too.

I was always told to have the base of the bulb pointed toward the back of the tank, so perpendicular. The reason is because no light comes out of the base of the bulb and very little comes out of the top.

its a single 250w setup. on a 36 " tank 36x20x20

If i have the reflector that is 24 " wide and have it going the lenght of the tnak can I have the bulb going the width with the base of the bulb at the back.

thats going to be a hard one but if you can figure out how to mount it that would be best. If you said two bulbs I would recomend parralell withthe tank and bases to the sides like mine.

The biggest problem is going to be your reflector but if you can mount it front to back and it lights up the tank nice thats all that matters.
