Cleaning my old tank
 

I am taking down my 50 gallon tank later this week (New 90g + 20g sump). The back of the tank is encrusted with some type of calcerous red algae. Can anyone recommend how to clean those off? Is scraping with a razor blade the only way, or is there a chemical method?

Scraping is certainly the fastest way. Should take about 5 minutes with a heavily encrusted tank. To use a chemical (vinegar, HCL), you'd have to fill the tank and soak it for a day, or less depending on the strength of the acid. If you use HCL, you need to neutralize it before disposing of it.

You should be thinking now," gee, acid sounds like a lot of work. Ill just use the razor!!" :razz:

Well, you'd fill it with water then add acid for a diluted solution.

I don't know whay anyone would use acid. People actually buy coraline scrappings to seed their tanks. I say scrape it off and re-use it! :smile:

I just layed my 50 on its side. Still had at least 1/4" min of room for vinegar. Let it soak in my carport for a couple of days and hosed it out. A true lazy mans cleaning method.


Did I mention that I went to the doctors cause I thought I had mono.

Turns out I'm just really, really, really lazy :lol: .
