main return pump
 

Hi,

I currently use a little giant 4 as a return pump on my reef. I would like to know, if and how often should it be taken apart for cleaning? (i.e. calcium buildup on shaft).

I use kalk and 2 part ESv additive, and it does from time to time build up on my power head shaft, and they have to be cleaned up to operate properly.

I haven't taken mine apart in 3 years and it's still working great!

Why not check it every six months? You could catch a problem before it gets out of hand & save a few $$$.

Depends on how high your Ca and Alk levels are IMO. Also how close to the intake of the pump you kalk drip is.

Also it's not clear to me whether simply running the pump in vinegar solution will be adequate, as I am too lazy to take pumps apart.
