180 gallon on the main floor
hey guys was going to get my parents a 180 gallon tank and was just wondering would i need any joists or post put in to hold the tank up, there will be a sump at the bottom as well probably a 50 gallon sump not sure yet.

That's an absolute maybe. Or not. Depends on floor material, what is under it, load bearing wall, middle of room, etc
|
You'll be fine. Just make sure that it sits accross the joists, not parallel with them.
Mine is main floor, and there was zero deflection. Mine is here above: http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pszxdyr8dm.jpg |
As long as the tank run across the joists and will be close to the wall where the joists can carry a bigger load you are fine,I have a 130 plus 30 gallon sump for a year now and the floor doesn't show any signs of stress.just go with a longer tank so you are spreading the load over as many joists you can..my tank is 6 foot and seats over 4 joists

Thanks for the tip guys.

The age of the house matters sometimes too.

Placing it across joists would be the best bet. I had my joists placed closer together than regular spacing and added 2 beams because I couldn't deal with the possibility of my tank ruining my house. You could always get someone (engineer) to drop by to see if it will hold
