Toad Stool Stalk Rot??? Prognosis??
 

Hi All,

I recently picked up what looked like a perfectly healthy leather Coral, however, this morning when the lights came on I noticed some damage to it's stalk. I was in a hurry when I picked it up and, admittedly, didn't inspect the specimen as well as I should have before purchase.

With that said, I usually buy the corals that they have written off as dead, and rejuvenate them back to health in my tank with 100% success so far, so my tank is healthy.

Is this a bacteria? Some type of "rot" common to this species? Or is this just some kind of irritation from rubbing on a rock? Any ideas on what I should do with this guy to help it recover?

Sending it back to the store really isn't
option...

The rot looks a little advanced to treat but try blowing the rot section away in a separate container as it should flake or rubble away from the colony.then give it an iodine dip, make sure you have adequate water flow in your tank and nothing near the toadstool to sting it.
change your carbon a little more often incase you have some chemical warefair.
If the rotting persists then cut the base off above the rot section and discard, dip the coral again and place back in the tank.
I dose iodine in my system and beleive helps my softies in there.

I thought some surgery might be in order. Would Kent Coral Vite suffice for a dip solution? I don't have any iodine since my salts provide a good amount for ambient uptake. I don't have any marine stores around me... I'm in Creston, BC.

P.S. I don't have any reef glue, would a rubber band suffice, to attach the cut to a rock?

you don't have to use reef glue, use some cheap gel glue from hardware store in your area will do. Crazy gel

Ahhh, Lugol's Iodine solution for a dip. Gotcha. I'll have some tomorrow.
