Cutting down tank?
 

I'm think about cutting a 30x18x24 tank Down to 30x18x18. Was wondering if it can be done without taking it apart or if can be done at all.

I'm sure it can be done but there is a risk of FUBARing it. You would probably have to remove all the silicone to the level you want, ensuring panes were separated. Then you would have to score it, pray (optional) and then tap it gently to have it crack along the score line. Have some sand paper on hand to go over the edges and then silicone on the rim.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking but figured I'd get some input and tips.

Never tried it, but would a wet tile saw be an option?

Out of 4 tanks I successfully cut 1 down without breaking it last time I tried

IMO not worth it, if you want a shorter tank buy a new one and save yourself the headache or pull the tank apart completely and cut it once it's apart

Agreed, not worth the trouble. If there is a size you prefer, I would see if anyone out there wants to trade. If not, sell the old tank and pay the difference for the tank you want.

I've cut my side overflow out of my 210 while it was together with a wet tile skill saw. It CAN be done, but it would be very tricky, especially near the corners where I'd imagine you'll get some chipping if you try and push it too fast. Like the other comments, not worth the hassle and potential problems. Get one the size you want.

i was just looking into the same thing. im pretty sure if you wanted it to come out perfectly the tank would have to be dismantled, each peice cut down and the tank put back together.

i was looking into having my 60x20x24 cut down to 18h and the cost of chop and rebuild was almost on par with just having a new tank built after all the labor involved. for the size of your tank i would say just have a new one made

I've been looking to do the same thing but thank GOD I found this thread. I'm looking for a shallow 3 ft x 2 ft x 20 inches or less to replace my 40 gallon breeder. The closest I've found is a 90 gal 3 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft which is too tall for my liking. Do you guys know any cheap tank builder in Vancouver area?
