Aquacontroller 3 and email alerts

I am about to possibly aquire one of these, I believe it can send email alerts and has an iphone app.

Can I plug this system to my laptop via an ethernet cable in order to get a wifi signal to it? (basically leave a an old laptop hooked to it 24/7)

I bridge mine through my laptop but I find it is an unreliable connection
