Its Coming!!!!!!

As earlier announced Tropic Marins Bio Actif sea salt will be landing soon, this is no ordinary salt, only been available in Europe up until recently the TM Bio actif reef salt come complete with not only all the trace elements found in their balling system, but also the Bio Actif low nutrient system added.

we will also have the NON Bio Actif version available called Pro-Reef which has been limited available for some time.

Available at Bayside corals in the next week and locally in Ottawa before national full release.

I take it they recommend this with there balling salts, any idea on pricing ball park ish

Thanks

Aqua-Digital 01-13-2014 08:43 PM

around $129 to $139 depending on location due to shipping costs for dealers. Thats for the Bio Actif.

The Pro reef is between $99- $109

YES it is higher priced than your average salt but again you get what you pay for (the RB review gives a good insight into this)

Yes this salt is designed to run with the balling system as it mirrors what the system puts in so you should not get spikes in your ranges.

It does not replace the balling system as said before when doing a water change you only replace that percentage of depleted elements.

For those that don't like clicking on links ;) Here is RB's excellent part of the review that explains the difference from other salts

Tropic Marin did something completely different when it launched their Bio Actif system, and more specifically when they launched their new salt. They added something that is usually left out in most salt. Organic Compounds. A book by Sorokin on Coral Reef Ecology states on page 66 that content of reef water in organic C is around 1 to 3 ppm. If the natural reefs of the world have a range of organics why wouldn’t we put them in our man-made glass reef houses?

Chemist and Guru Hans-Werner is the man behind the salt. He works for Tropic Marin and was able to sit down and help us explain why this salt differs from other salts. He tells us that organic substances are an important component of natural seawater, especially over reefs, a saltwater within these organic substances should be closer to natural conditions than a saltwater without organics. Organic substances can alter the solubility and bioavailability of trace elements and can even achieve a codegradation of refractive organic substances like yellow substances and organic toxins.

Organic compounds that you might be familiar with could include Vodka, vinegar, sugar or vitamin C. We don’t know what specific organic compound is being added to the Bio Actif salt, but we would assume its one of the above. The salt creates more hydrophobic compounds and bacteria then traditional salts which increases the load of your protein skimmer. You shouldn’t be using this salt without a decent protein skimmer. The reaction to the skimmer was so impressive in fact its like pouring Sodium lauryl sulfate into running tap water. Not to that extent but hopefully you’ve gotten the point. Run a good protein skimmer

Mixing the salt to its recommended dosage yield the following results when testing the water:
Calcium CA 442 PPM
Magnesium 1348 PPM
8 KH
PH 8.36

Also a quick note: The salt dissolves fast with no residual aftereffects common in some salts.

Seems like a very interesting product with a unique spin.

So lets get to the fun question, in your opinion why should I decide to pay more than double the cost of my current salt for this product?

You have detailed that the product contains:

I understand this has been shipped across the world to get to us so yes, the price will be more expensive. Really though, am I actually paying double to get 1-3 ppm of organic carbon? There has to be more to this, does this salt also bring me beer and provide moral support while I do my water change?

So I am assuming you wouldn't want to be running or trying to run a ulns with this salt. So do the tropic marin balling salts contain these organics found in the salt ?

Keep im mind this salt comes in 200gal mix pail versus the 160gal.

How will this work with a system that already utilizes carbon dosing. For example, I run bio-pellets. Is the Pro-reef salt the same as the Bioactif sans the carbon source?

Thanks

The Bio actif (that also can be purchased separate from TM marketed as Reef Actif) does have ULNS qualities, however on a lesser scale than found in systems such as zeovit, the salt is design to replicate every element found in nature this includes natural levels of organics as Han explained to Reef Builders in the article, it does not replace your ULNS, it will complement it.

In regards to price not something I am going to really get into, you get what you pay for in this hobby. If you feel its too expensive for you, dont use it. But until you try it you wont know what you are getting. The RB article again does cover this topic to an extent.

If you dont want the added bio Actif part part still want TM's quality then Pro reef salt from TM is the mid range option.

Here is the best explanation to the Actif part of the salt mix
