Adding new sand??

I have talked with a few reliable sources as far as adding new sand to an already running setup and so far I haven't really heard anything I should worry about. Wouldn't mind a few more opinions on adding new sand before I go ahead and do it. Id rather be safe than sorry. Is there anything I should be worried about or do if i decide to do it? Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't be a problem. Just be sure to mix it in and spread it out so that you're not smothering things that are adapted specifically to living near the surface. Otherwise just rinse it really well and you're good to go.

Worse thing that can happen is cloudy water for a day or two.

Awesome thanks guys, I just wasn't sure if maybe it would start a small cycle in my tank or not. I plan on adding 2 20 lbs bags. Ill just rinse well and do it slowly.

Just dont dig to deep into your existing sand as it might release some really toxic junk.

Just before you came by the other day, I had added about half a pail to my main tank. I add cleaned sand into my existing systems once a year usually.

Hey Nick, what kind of sand are you talking about, the black sand ? Both my friend & I have done it with no ill effects, but that was new Fiji pink live sand. For my friend's it was added to old sand during a tank upgrade & for me it was with our newly acquired used tank (came with sand).

to limit clouding, after rinsing put in a few plastic bags, then cut open bags on existing sand surface. I'd do one 20# bag, one side, one day, other side next day.

Or you can also use a PVC pipe as a funnel and pour the sand through the pipe to the bottom of the tank to prevent cloudiness.
