Lower PH?

I'm cycling my tank right now and my PH is at 8.5. Is that too high and how should I lower it?

Thanks

It is high, but still ok. How long has the tank been cycling for? How are you testing for PH? Give it a little more time. Try a wter change an see what happens. Leaving the lights off on the tank will lower Ph, but that's just a short term solution.

Its been cycling a little over 2 months with live sand and rock. I use RO water. The thing is that the other times when I've tested it the PH has been a little low. Is it possible that the test is bad?

What are you using to test the pH? Some kits can be hard to tell the colour differences.

Also, pH will change dependant on time of day, and whether or not you have fresh air coming into he room. Many other factors will affect it as well. Anywhere between 7.9 and 8.4 is fine, as long as it doesn't swing quickly from one extreme to the other.

I'm using the hagen tests. I have to go to the LFS today, maybe I should get them to double check it.

Hello,

Get a good pH monitor. The Pinpoint pH monitor is good. pH meter is as essential as a hydrometer.
