LF: Reefsafe aptasia eating filefish GVRD

Thought I might see if anyone local has a Reefsafe aptasia eating filefish for sale or can lend me before I get some berghia. Would much rather add a fish to take care of my problem than berghia as it is less delicate. Thanks! I'll take really good care of him/her! Promise!

All the "reef safe" filefish I've ever had ate corals

Slyguy00 08-01-2013 06:00 PM

Is there a reason people dont use aptasia x? I have read nothing but good reviews, its totally reef safe and works very well. I have tried it myself when my tank was relatively new and since using it not 1 aptasia has returned.

I found that even though the aptasia x did kill some of them , it caused them to spread ,and made the problem worse.

I used aptasia x with poor, poor results.

I gave up trying.

filefish ate my corals and aiptasia x was useless. Peppermints failed in my large tank but second try with them in a smaller tank was an overnight success.

Copperbanded butterfly is the best on my opinion:biggrin:

Filefish

I have had 4 filefish first three did nothing but pick at corals no luck with aptasia but number 4 got it all in a 120 gallon tank in about 6 weeks so some work. Also I have a copperband and it does nothing for me.

I tried Joe's Juice, Aiptasia X, Lemon Juice, Hot Water, Super high salinity water and all these things do is make them multiply faster... The minute you kill them with these methods, they will release more spores. I personally found it best to try and grab the rock out and torch it for a good 10 seconds. If you cannot take it out of the water, grab some putty and just try to cover the entire area it is in.These are good methods if you have just a few. If you have an invasion, then copperband or filefish may do the trick (I have had experience with copperband but not with filefish)

Super glue and putty seems to work for me.

kalk paste works for me.

I bought 5 peppermints and they seem to have gotten the smaller ones. but they're nocturnal so I don't see them. I think I've only seen one or 2 at night lately. might've died off by now. never had much luck keeping peppermints longer than 6 months.

Forgot to say I will compensate you of course =)

Wheelman76 08-04-2013 03:58 AM

Which fish the file or copperband ?

Kraken 08-04-2013 04:14 AM

I would say filefish cause copperbands are somewhat harder to keep.

Borderjumper 08-04-2013 04:19 AM

What kinds of corals do you find the filefish eat? I'm thinking of trying one in my softy tank. I doubt they will munch leathers or nems but a little concerned about candycanes.

Both are fine but as Kraken said, would rather prefer the file as the copperband is harder to keep.

Aptasia went rampid in my tank. AptasiaX was great at the onset but got progressively worst!

I decided to purchase a coral banded butterfly. It worked great eating all the aptasia.......along with the rest of my corals!

Just need to find the right copper banded butterfly.

Good luck!

acepumping 09-02-2013 04:02 PM

I tried everything.. only success was I bought 8 peppermints lol. Starved everything in myvtank for a week orso.. I cut down the feedings I mean.. aptasia was gone in 2 weeks..
