Chipped Corner Concern (60g Cube)
 

I have recently aquired a 60g cube with a chipped corner. I am curious to hear what people think about the condition of the corner. Google has returned mixed opinions, and I am not too sure what to think myself.

The tank is a 60g cube. The front 3 sides are all starphire and the rear pane is just standard glass and appears the only panel that is damaged.

I originally planned on just applying quite a bit of extra silicone to the corner on the inide since it would all be covered by the sand. As well as a light coat on the outside to keep the glass from flaking off. I am now contemplating getting the back pane replaced but it seems like it may not be cost effective.

That looks a little nasty to me, I personally would replace the piece that is chipped. Have you filled it to see if it leaks?

Replace it IMO, risk of 60g on you floor isn't with it

No it doesnt leak but I am just worried about the long term.

Does anybody here have any experience with running a tank with similar damage?

I will contact Concept Aquatics as well as BowValley this week to see how expensive it will be to just replace the back pane.

60 gal of water on your floor will mean new flooring at the minimum and more than likely drywall paint baseboards I'd replace it glass isn't that expensive

Wow, that doesn't just looked chipped to me. That looks like it is cracked all the way through the glass pane! I would definitely lose sleep over it. Even if it holds water now I would definitely do something about it, regardless of how successful someone else may have been at running a similarly cracked tank.

Better to adress it now than after you've filled it with rocks, fish, coral and salt water.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I totally agree that it just isnt worth the risk. I know it would definitely always be on the back of my mind. Its such a nice tank too so it is definitely worth it to make it perfect.

I have sent emails to bowvalley and concept aquatics for quotes. Hopefully it will still be cost effective to replace that pane.

Not repairing a chip it what I think cost me around 15G's to repair my hardwood flooring, baseboards and even some flooring in the basement. And I had "only a 50 gallon". I would replace it!!!

Just an update - Dropped off the tank today at Concept Aquatics for the repair and should have it back for the long weekend. Looking forward to seeing it back in mint shape!!

Glad you took it to Concepts & not Bow Valley cause you might have never got it back.
