Another light thread.. Need some help and advice!
 

Hey all

Looking for some info. I recently ordered some ATI bulbs but was sent Korallen-Zucht and I might actully keep them thought.. But Im not sure what would be better for my tank. I have always ran ATI bulbs and really liked them.

Old Lights:
ATI Aquablue special x2
ATI Purple Plus x1
ATI Blue Plus x3

New lights I got in the mail

KZ New generation x3
KZ Super Blue x2
I kept my old purple plus for the 6th bulb.

I would love some feedback on these bulbs as all the threads I have found are a couple years old and would like update info.

I think I don`t need 3 KZ New gen and maybe should order their Coral Light in replacement of one of the New Gen.

I don't know but have heard that KZ have higher PAR kicks than ATI bulbs. So you got better lights I should say :) New Gens are 14000k while coral light are 10000k. Will come down to personal preference for color. But I think 3 NG, 2SB and 1 Purple will render almost the same color as your previous configuration.

Well that is good to hear. The main thing I wanted was to make sure I would still have enough par for good sps growth and 2nd a bluer looking tank as per my last light set up. I really want the best growth I can have

As far as I know, Giesemann bulbs < ATI bulbs < KZ bulbs. You should try out the lights and see how the colors suits your need. It will be more about aesthetics now than PAR. You might like it even better than the last time or you may not like it ;)

Logically, you should atleast have almost the same growth if not better (although I would lean towards better since they are KZ bulbs). If I were you, I wouldn't be worried about the combo :D

KZ bulbs are just more expensive than ATI bulbs for (maybe) a little bit of advantage and hence people tends towards ATI. Both are German bulbs so no compromise in their quality :D

I run 2 kz coral light II gen And 2 kz super blues and they are nice lights. Nice colors and I had no problem growing corals. I'm going the other way from kz to ati bulbs. ($50 price difference). You will enjoy the kz bulbs for sure.

I've read the opposite of what Raied stated
ATI are the preferred bulbs, with KZ coming in a close second, and Geissman being possibly 3rd depending on what you read where
For me, the prices follow the trends above
I replaced all my ATIs with KZs as I can get them locally instead of ordering
I went from;
Blue Plus to Super Blue (close enough for me)
Fiji Pink to Fiji Purple (don't care)
Aquablue Special to Coral Light II new gen (from 15K to 14K)

All are minimal differences in spectrum

The Coral Light you mentioned is a 10K bulb and looks yellow to the eye, but is a very bright white in your tank and would be a good replacement for one of your gen II bulbs

If you're not growing show corals, or trying to make a living with them, you'll be fine with either brand

Just don't change all your bulbs at the same time
Do it over weeks per pair so your corals can adjust

If you want to compare spectrums, look on Reef Geek

Honestly, PARs cannot be compared between different people's value since ballast, reflector and the operating temperatures are variable. I tried finding the numbers but couldn't. Sanjay's reef lighting guide doesn't include T5. Don't know why he didn't look into it :twised:

Like I said, for most of us, ATI and KZ are both good enough, and are the best around

Yah other than the price, one cannot go wrong with any of those two brands of bulbs.

IMO kz are a better bulb we sell both the ati and kz (in fact the only two we carry) bulbs while ati are def cheaper we get better reviews for kz and most people find they last longer then ati bulbs do.


just a FYI i gave you the kz at the ATI price since we were out of the ATI you wanted;)

No worries Denny, I think I will keep them for sure. I just didnt know much about the KZ so I wanted to ask some others. I just need to switch out a New Gen for a coral light. I might just order that and a fiji pink.
