Skimmer Kings 8 footer again

Well yes its happening again. Myself and Tammy bought another house and will be moving to a 4 level split. Tammy has told me that she wants the 8 footer tank back into the wall. She likes how it takes up no room. Wow i was shocked to hear that. but this one will be cool. i will have a L cove for the tank and it will be viewed from the front and the side. thinking of a rear end over flow, and probably will need 2 more MITRAS for the lighting.

it will be 96x24x24.

oh Ya you know what that means......

SKIMMER TIME

FishyFishy! 06-12-2013 02:33 PM

Awesome!! Can't wait to see this... again lol

Skimmerking 06-12-2013 02:44 PM

Any thoughts on a Skimmer. I think I'm leaning for a External either a Deltec.
A insump will be a Vertex 250 or a BK

what are your thoughts

lastlight 06-12-2013 02:46 PM

hated my deltec. new pumps are garbage... i had nothing but issues.

sphelps 06-12-2013 03:12 PM

Perhaps a good time to gain some experience with a DC version. BKs have them now or if you can find one a RLSS.

I got me a Vertex in 250 this winter and I'm liking it. Only ever tried a SRO2000INT before this one, so not a lot of experience.
I wish the water adjustment was a gate valve like the SRO instead of that miter cut on the pipe.

H2o2 06-13-2013 02:25 AM

I have that diablo 8" with dc pump works great skims great ramp up ramp down so controlable micro fine bubbles and none in the out flow

gregzz4 06-13-2013 02:45 AM

Gregg I'm leaning toward a AP902 with self cleaning Head if not it will be a vertex 250 or a 702

gregzz4 06-13-2013 05:08 AM

Not familiar with those models but ...
Either you have access to a used AP902, or you don't know they are soon to be unavailable - unless the sites I checked are not carrying them anymore, but they are still for sale ?

You da Skimmer man, so you'll know better than me what you need

I was kinda hoping you'd try out the Vertex Alphas as I wanna get one one day - the 170 or 200 looks good to me for my setup
One day ...

i have a Alpha 170 cone that i have. hint hint. i love it
the AP902 and the 702 are discontinued however the use a ehiem pump and you can still buy them. the unit will be used unless i can find a Alpha 250

That is the sexiest thing i've ever seen. It's a shame it costs as much as a good used car. lol.

Skimmerking 06-28-2013 10:18 PM

Ok fms i was talking to my local glass company about getting glass. Diamond edge I have dealt with him on small pieces of glass a d he always coming through for me. So instead of going to Winnipeg where I get my glass im goi g to try him and see what price he can get me. The good thing is he will bri g it over and build it for me in my basement. Excellent guy too so we got to chatting and then he told me about a 10 footer he did. :BIG::BIG:yup that is what my Brain did. I was all smiles. So he is going to price me out a 10x2x2. Or 120x24x24 omg hmmmm i could have semserious problems then.

1. How many MITRAS would i need to light this i have one now.
2. I thought a out 1/2" with some bracing obvious
3. Thought about 20" high too.
4 return pump i was thinking of a d.c 10,000
5. For circulation it would be PVC wrapping around the top with sections every 24" and powered by a good flow pump like a waveline pump i think

sphelps 06-28-2013 11:31 PM

With mitras your max footprint per light is pretty much 36x32 so given that you might want to consider going a little wider and little shorter so 108x30x24 works quite nicely for only 3 fixtures otherwise you're probably looking at 4 fixtures.

sphelps 06-28-2013 11:32 PM

1/2" is way too light IMO for 10' tank as well, doesn't matter how you brace it.

good call Steve thanks I have never had a 10 ft tank and this is what I'm looking for good points

my 8 footer was 1/2" all around

jorjef 06-29-2013 02:06 AM

Give Stu or Steve a call at Prairie Aquatics and Exotics in Regina. They have a display tank the same dimensions you're looking at, 120x24x24.

r they selling it Jor

jorjef 06-29-2013 02:22 AM

No but they could advise on glass thickness etc. if you're undecided on that. It was built a few months back by someone in Calgary I believe.

mrhasan 06-29-2013 02:26 AM

Maybe this chart can help you a bit?

I read in a thread in canreef that minimum suggested safety factor is 3.80.

3/4" / 19mm is what any builder will tell you to use.

Here are some tools you can play around to find the right thickness:

If you don't get a BK, get a CSC before a Vertex.

I have 3 Vertex (180s and 250s) and they are fussy like EuroReefs. They like to overflow like EuroReefs because the air intakes get plugged like EuroReefs. See a theme? Makes sense since they are designed like EuroReefs. They run great for the first year, then for some reason you end up having to clean the air intake twice a month after that. It seems like I can never get a steady water level in the skimmer because the air intake is always at a different level of plugged-ness. One thing I do like about the Vertex is replacement pumps are easily available. If you're in a real pinch you can order one from J&L with overnight shipping.

Although I haven't seen the CSCs in person they look a lot like SWC cone skimmers, and my SWC cone skimmers are both plug and play, set and forget. The SWCs are great skimmers for the price point, but I will never buy another product from "Jayson the smuggler". :( I'm interested to see how the CSCs perform in the next few months and see if customer service and replacement pumps prove to be consistent. I might consider replacing all my Vertex skimmers with CSCs.
