Pond UV different than a Reef UV?
I have a line on a Laguna UV sterilizer I want to use for my quarantine setup. I have never heard of one using a Pond UV on a reef tank before... is there any difference?
I highly doubt there is, but just wondering before I take the plunge. Its considerably cheaper than a new or used Aqua UV or Emperor Aquatics UV. It's this particular model: http://www.lagunaponds.com/lagunaeng...0.php?link=175 |
There is no difference, I've used that same model on reefs before. Just watch for rated volume as the purpose is different so rated volumes are much higher for pounds.

if you change your mind let me know. I'm in the market for a 55w pond sterilizer
|
Ok sweet. Yeah I don't think I have to worry about the volume, it's only goin on about 100 gallons of water. I knew when I saw up too 5000 gallon ponds that there was something fishy. lol.

Don't you just love how sticking the word 'reef' somewhere in the title of a product instantly makes it jump 3 times in price? I swear it must cost manufacturers at least 20 bucks a letter to print that word.

Yeah so true! "here's my regular 30g tank with HOB filter and a half bag of salt, no skimmer or livestock....ASKING $1000" LOL |
The rating is very very different.
For QT sterilization you want 90,000 µw/cm2. You need to match the light output and the flow rate to get this. For example, our UV sterilizer: 30,000 µw/cm2 (EOL) 35,000 gph 45,000 µw/cm2 (EOL) 23,333 gph 60,000 µw/cm2 (EOL) 17,500 gph 75,000 µw/cm2 (EOL) 14,000 gph 90,000 µw/cm2 (EOL) 11,667 gph This same UV sterilizer will clarify a 100,000g pond When a UV sterilizer is rated for pond they give you the pond volume that it will clarify. Call the manufacturer and ask what flow rate you need to pass through it to give you 90,000 µw/cm2 and this will kill everything down to the protozoa level and stop disease in your qt system. |
90,000 will not kill ick, I have seen the requirement for this is 280,000??
The difference generally is the pond UV is much bigger than those designed for ponds. Mine was huge 24'' 55 watt designed for pond. It did not kill what ever was on the fish. Quote:
