I've always wanted to try a mantis shrimp. Now I want to, um, try a mantis shrimp. They sound delicious.

They are! I ate a whole tray of them on the beach, sweet revenge :)

asylumdown 04-24-2013 08:08 PM

Think you were eating one of the same species that shows up in the trade?

Do they taste like some sort of forbidden lobster?

windcoast reefs 04-24-2013 08:15 PM

In the south Pacific they eat them just like lobster here!

Hard to tell. They were BBQ'd :) Tasted nothing like shrimp or lobster. Very unique taste.

I'll have to try one next time I'm down there!

they taste like Crawfish, which as my son keeps reminding me is actually not a fish at all.

My son has a blue crawfish in his room and he keeps asking me if he can eat it.

I had it in Hong Kong when I was younger, I remember seeing them live in tubs at street markets.

Saw a lot in the markets in Bangkok. Some were huge! I ate them in Cambodia, where they sell them by the tray on the beach. Lime and black pepper seasoning. nom nom.

asylumdown 04-24-2013 08:59 PM

Well I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that I get one in as a hitchhiker. I'll raise it up nice and big, then I'll poach it with some butter! My tank will be the world's least efficient aqua-culture set-up.

BlueTang<3 04-24-2013 09:02 PM

I don't know if tank raised in ur reef would have the best taste, but maybe I just picture eating a fish from a lake in the summer and the mud taste :frown:

Might as well eat horses, or cats, or dogs...

I'm told they're all good. Cats are hard to catch tho :)

Coleus 04-25-2013 04:30 AM

I preferred them over lobster because i found their meat is little bit sweeter. Also you get more meat out of them than lobster for the same price you pay :-)

monza 04-25-2013 01:43 PM

I don't like cat, horse and dog taste fine.

ok that officially looks delicious. Is the meat easy to get out? All the pictures I've seen is them served with their shells still on.

and fwiw, I don't care much for horse meat. I've unwittingly eaten it twice, and found it rather gamey

Very easy to get out. BTW...it was delicious.

daniella3d 04-25-2013 09:05 PM

just wondering where one would find them for sale in Canada? I go to Kim Phat often and I have seen nothing like that. There are live crabs, lobster, fish but I have never seen any mantis dead or alive?

asylumdown 04-25-2013 09:38 PM

hehe, all the mantis shrimp that arrive on our shores are sold as pets, there's none left over for the grocery store!

Umm....there's one extremely fresh in your tank!

Top-dogg 04-25-2013 11:00 PM

Yes they're sold as Carribean lobster!

daniella3d 04-26-2013 02:22 AM

I paid 89$ for my peacock mantis shrimp...now that would be a really expensive meal!

I guess these things have more value as a pet than as a meal. I am willing to pay that much for my pet but I would never pay that much for one piece of meat.
