Kryptic4L's 100 Gallon Build.
Gonna take a timeout today from labor. And reflect on my past couple weeks. I finished work on march 1, So I should be off for a couple months, perfect time to mess with some fishy business.
So I decided to upgrade my biocube 29 tank to a 65 gallon rsm, I found one used, tore it down, set it up. Salt creep was appearing from the bottom corner, I wiped it down let it sit, and it was back 12 hours later. Wiped it down again, and it was still a touch moist. Decided it might have a small leak and shut it down. Searched furiously for another tank, could not find anything, Bought a brand new rsm from the store, Set it up and and stand had some issues, Wobbly as all heck and everytime I tryed to shim, Something else would go even more out of whack. Alright screw this Rsm business. Took it back. Finally found something I liked on the market, from wayner I picked up his tank, I really liked the dimensions as a 120 was what I was really eyeing up before settling on the rsm idea, but I was really after the 48 x 24 footprint. Learned alot over the past couple weeks, Painted my first wall, installed my first blind, Installed my first gfci, Only to have to install a second, as the location changed, which I screwed up, so second guessed myself and ordered a electrician to do the work. Basically payed for a reciept to pass the buck if the house burns down. And troubleshooted my rodi unit, to find out that the waste restrictor was in the the fresh water intake side :) Also, Found I need to chill out and take more time with things, As now the original RSM is sitting in my basement, holding water with no signs of leak, So i can only assume at this time, that the moisture i was seeing was built up water that dripped into the bottom brace from the outside, Slowly releasing its self back. Anyways thats the short version of the past two weeks. Lost 5 pounds from all the work that has been going into this. |
Picture time....
What the corner was gonna look like. The builder paint sucks and looked like crap once i hit it a few times. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...psabe9c044.jpg The corner after paint. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps4d8a4bff.jpg The corner after blinds http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps3532cc50.jpg |
The tank. courtesy of wayner
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps6658500a.jpg The stand set up http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...psce56cf4e.jpg Anyways I ripped all the fuzzy stuff off the top of the stand, And found me a nice peice of ply. Sealed it with some kilz, and top coated with rustoleum. Ill attach it probably tommorow, As the paint just finished drying today. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps89390269.jpg Currently contimplating adding a euro brace to the tank. |
That's a great setup you've picked up!! Love the paint color, not usually a blue fan but I like your choice! Keep the pics coming!

the sump that was supposed to be used.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps77da7faf.jpg the sump that was purchased because of a concept garage sale. Might use the "Refuge" area for ato instead. Currently soaking in water in vinegar thanks to some sweet magical shop dust. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps8f6b9ec7.jpg My favorite new tools after switching out 3 tanks in 2 weeks, Shop vac for that little bit of water u can never get out of the bottom of the tank, after syphoning. And easy moves..!!!! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps0979611a.jpg and the boys eagerly awaiting their new digs. ( Missing from photo, Coral beauty, Blue spotted jawfish, and a lawnmower blenny ( who was not originally supposed to make the move, yet algae seems to be dissapearing so at least hes putting in work ) ) http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps2e903374.jpg |
Nice stand....it's aching for a nice piece of granite or marble :)
|
lol would be nice !!!!
added some rimz to the tank today. haters hate on.. however i have a basketball team in my tank all wearing jordans. so its gonna need some kind of top thanks to dave@concept for the advice today. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...psd4ebaf61.jpg |

Hey looks good glad you have your tank problems all figured out the new one looks super ! Do you have all your equipment bought yet ?
|
Getting there :) seems like every time I do something I remember 5 other things I need :)
|
So messing with muriatic.......
Hmmm really glad I did this on the small scale first... In. 5 gallon pail with 10 l of water and only 1 liter of muriatic the amount of bubbles to start the operation caught me off guard. And it would seem 2 very large boxes of baking soda has not been enough to nutralize. Nasty nasty stuff. Need to plan the larger batch a bit better |

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps7be7768f.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps1995617b.jpg finished the plumbing today didnt go as planned had to make one run to the store and still botched it... no biggy as long as she does er job. shed blood for the second time today luckily this time i didnt damage a good pair of jeans in the process. thinking about loading the overflow with sand for some future mangroves. |
Build is lookin' great
I'm sure you'll be very happy with the larger tank over the RSM I'm 'almost' kicking myself for going with a 75g instead of a 4' 120g Looking forward to your progress, and LOTS of pictures  |
Thanks Greg. Your only kicking yourself because your on the wrasse train :) otherwise your tank looks great.

been on a shopping spree, last night and tonight.

that was an expensive trip
|
Might have to take you up on that Beer offer once this tank it up and going. ahaha
|
wow you made one hell of a mess in your kitchen!!! i'm just curious... are you married?
things are looking great you scored a sweet tank and stand looking forward to more. |
Brett yes I am . She tolerates it.
J, anytime - once you can actually walk in my kitchen As for an update. I was having a disco party tonight - with my newly hung lights and then bam. Gfci tripped and tripped again and again... Moved to another gfci receptacle, they seem to be holding on so far. So back to the disco. Made a temporary echo tech house http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps155bb229.jpg And rerouted my emergency line as the sideways travel seemed to be impeding flow. Feeling kinda Canadian in the old sump tonight. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps3c7a6676.jpg |
Good for you lol... mine is less tolerant. Then again I've done smart things like tip a can of purple primer over in the middle of the kitchen floor.
|
Wow I must have overpaid for the anemone for you to afford all that stuff lol
About the gfic plug in are they side by side ? You should only have one on a circuit they will cancel each other out I believe but I am a carpenter not an electrician Looking good I am jealous of all the new toys you have there |
lastlight its funny you should mention, i did get some purple primer on my floor :) - i may have bribed her with promises of a kitchen table
evil both gfcis are on the same circuit but are wired independent of each other. so if one trips the other does not. the light made it through the night so i can only assume its a weak gfci on the one end. and the radions obviously have a engineering issue i am just really happy it happened right away. now i know to keep the lights on their own receptacle. last two days were my mexican vacation money spent . we were supposed to be in mexico this week. so im just bringing cancun to me :) |
Looking good.
Love your tyewrap plumbing supports, lol. |

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.
Got the muriatic / bleached rock in yesterday. ( which FYI I will never do again. Without a good place to dump acid . The price was about 120 bucks after the trash can baking soda to neutralize and acid. ). Could of got some Marco rocks for a similar price ) The live rock from the temporary tank went in today. Just have my main tank to go. Which I'm gonna play by ear. Since there was no Interest in my rsm 250. I think it will make a mighty fine quarantine tank.probably remove a few bulbs from the hood to keep temps down. Still need to build the top trim, get some rare earth magnets for the door and figure out the some kind of home for the wiring and auto top off |
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps34ced6cd.jpg
found this dude scaling the silicone, never seen a crab with such skills. |
Well just a quick update found me a auto top off container that will have to work for now, until I can really figure out how my electrical is all gonna sit in the stand.
Finally frigging found some 1/4 mesh for a proper screen in this city. About two hours after I placed my brs order for some. As you can see in the photo the screen I found at Canadian tire was to large . But this golden acre plastic chicken wire was the ticket. Was 30 for a roll. On the upside of the golden acre visit. I found me a really kick butt plant. So I had to have it . http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps2cf59a19.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...psb72233d3.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps83fa05c6.jpg |
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps39bd485b.jpg
mission control completed just waiting on a brs order to get my socks / carbon / gfo on the go and screen top 3.0 gonna contimplate swapping to an apex system over the next few weeks. but for now the da system has been decent to me |
nice setup - can't wait to see it in action.
nice skimmer btw! |
Thanks noy
Since Monday sucks for a lot of people. I figure I may as well post some fts. Got the biocube ( my old main ) transferred last night. No one was found upside down this morning so I'm happy. As to where the Blue spot jawfish is digging in his new home is yet to be found. Lights are currently ramping up. And they really mess with the iPhone camera. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps216c87b0.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...pse6a4846a.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps988eeeb7.jpg |
Current inhabitants - yellow wrasse - ruby head wrasse - coral beauty - lawn mower Benny - blue spot jawfish - 2 x semi Picasso clowns - 3 x lyretail anthias 2 female 1 male - cleaner shrimp.
|
Almost forgot - special thanks to concept for being so awsome and helping me along with this build.
Tank - sump built by concept Everything I had to buy was also purchased there. Except for the heater :) And Dave's awesome advice on the top trim. Yes there is a screen top on there when the pictures were taken. |
|
Operation kitchen table was a big success tonight, now I have somewhere to sit and watch the tank .
Yes it's outdoor furniture, however it is incredibly hard to find kitchen tables that match charcoal cabinets http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...ps6719aec1.jpg Couple more days of cleaning basement / garage / truck. Then it's onto operation water make / mix / quarantine station |
Lookin good, looks like I've gotta get my butt in gear and get mine setup now
|
Love the scape! Got some killer deapth in there. Looking great so far.
