Sun Corals
Thought I share some photos of my tanks. I focus on Sun Corals and Montiporas. Thanks for sharing the great pics. I can't believe how clear some of the pictures turned out. You definately can't tell you were shooting through glass and some of the pictures don't even look like they are under water!
Nice looking collection of sun corals as well. Any tips/tricks on keeping them happy and healhty? |
Shoot perpendicular to the glass and use a macro lense - this eliminates any distortion.
As for the Sun Corals - i have a routine where I feed with blood worms and brine alternatively. I wait until the main lights go out (which is 10pm for me) and feed. The fish will leave the food alone that way (asleep or in their little caves). I use "julian's thing" for the brine and a small turkey baster for the blood worms. I direct food into the heads. The Tubastrea don't need a lot of precision in feeding but with the dendro you do need to make sure the each head gets fed. Right now i feed every other day. When you get them I would really recommend a daily feeding regiment because they are usually in bad shape at the LFS. Otherwise they are pretty easy to keep and very forgiving as far as water parameters. |
Whoa, great pics and awesome collection! FTS? What are your specs? Husbandry? :-)
|
Wow, great pics. It looks like you're actually diving while taking those pictures.

Awesome pictures! How do you adjust the white balance? looks great
the dendros prefer being on the bottom of the tank more? |
Quote:
I try to give some shade to the dendros from other corals but they are still fairly high on the tank. |
Great looking FTS Noy!
I see you are running one of the Sicce voyageur pumps for circulation. How do you like it? Is it comparable to a tunze of simlar size or noiser with less flow? I was thinking about picking up a few of them to add some addtional flow where the vortechs can't get to in my system but I haven't heard much in terms of reviews. |
Good eye! its a voyager 3 (1200gph), whisper quiet never had any issues but a bit on the pricey side. A nice feature is that you can control(limit) the flow through a rotating limiting plate on the outflow. Its a bit awkward in orienting the flow beyond the hinged arms - you have to rotate the whole pump.
Actuallly, when i took that FTS i just took down all my Maxi-jets. I got a deal on some Koralia's so will out outfiting with those otherwise I probably have stayed with the Sicce. |
My latest ... Maxima Clam, can't believe how much i paid for this... can't believe i'm thinking of getting another one...
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8096/8...9f929ccd_z.jpg IMG_4722 by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] Red Gorgonian. really can't believe i got talked into buying this. I have a purple one that i'm working hard just to maintain. Will take more photos once i have polyp extension. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8086/8...8aaa9c5f_z.jpg IMG_4725 by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] Elegance Coral. I thought i lost this guy to disease but its making a major comeback - the entire colony shrunk into the rock housing for over 2 months. You can see pretty major tissue loss at the bottom. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8252/8...86a5685a_z.jpg IMG_4741 by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] Rock Flower Anemone. had him for a while - he climbed into my fragbox and just stayed there. hard to photograph. Shame, because under actinic lighting its very colourful. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8390/8...e94db9be_z.jpg IMG_4748 by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] Closeup shot of my Montipora Confusa colony - looks like a martian landscape. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8366/8...6f45375b_z.jpg IMG_4738 by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] Montipora Rainbow. I put this guy beside a mushroom coral for 1/2 day - the entire left side turned dark brown. Thought i lost it - but has recovered in about a week. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8112/8...4d8dc91c_z.jpg IMG_4727 by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] Montipora Pokerstar. My euphyllia coral reached out and stung it - you can see the tissue loss at the top. It was a lot worse but its making a comeback - we'll see if i can save it. Its a encrusting variant so i'm trying to get it to encrust my rockwork http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8388/8...50312c70_z.jpg IMG_4735 by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] Montipora Pokerstar. Also another victim of euphyllia coral stinging - plus it go knocked over and lost for 2 weeks. Let see if i can save it. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8089/8...755a01a4_z.jpg IMG_4734 by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] Euphyillia. This guy has killed more corals than me. It killed a beautiful torch just recently. Its now stuck on the glass at the corner of the tank. Just can't bring myself to get rid of it ... got it as a 1 head frag originally. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8233/8...9c9a0026_z.jpg IMG_4746 by Ngai On, on Flickr |

Recent SPS acquisitions. Still light acclimating (on a frag rack).

Not sure why i do this but bought a chili coral. Yep, add another non-photo, hard to care for coral in the mix. Its in the corner until i figure out what to do with it. I only get polyp extension at night and have been target feeding it. The LFS had a much bigger colony but i really didn't like the colouration and they couldn't get any polyp extension (even in the dark).

Sun Coral Propagation
Once your sun corals get established you will get propagation from your colony "spewing" out mini polyps. Unfortunately most of mine end up stuck under the rockwork and don't make it. This is the only survivor so far. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8402/8...41d52d1a_c.jpg IMG_5633 by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] |
ORA Ponape Birdsnest
Exactly 1 month of growth. Pictures taken Apr 10/March 10 http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8241/8...c595a0a1_c.jpg sps growth by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] |
Contrast the SPS growth with my Orange Pavona
Top picture Feb 2013, Bottom picture April 2013 You can see the top part (white) where the putty holds the frag is completely encrusted to the rockwork - about a 1/3 inch growth . Hopefully I can see some growth onto the rockwork. On the right side near the top you can also see the encrusting over a small section of the rockwork. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8254/8...af4a62d7_c.jpg pavona growth by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/93072545@N02/] |
That Pavona is cool! Looks like it is about to go to war with some GSP tho. Poor Pavona :-(

Just picked these up from SUM - they have a new coral shipment. Literally got them as they unpacked them
Red Goniopora The colours don't do this coral justice. Its a fluorescent metallic red. No polyp extension yet as I just put it into the display after a dip. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7427/8...aba5fb05_c.jpg IMG_5754 http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7427/8...cf65e050_c.jpg IMG_5753 Lavender Blue Goniopora http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7352/8...519a4ec9_c.jpg IMG_5750 http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7322/8...8d149202_c.jpg IMG_5756 will post more after polyp extension! |

just curious, i have a colony of dendros too but yours are clearly more healthy than mine!
i'm going to be transferring them into my new tank in a month or two, how do you have them placed? also, what kind of lighting do you have? mine are yellow and orange but im liking the greeny look more! |
I have both in the middle to upper third of the tank - about 12-18 inches from the top. One is shaded under a big monti plate. However, neither are affected by light or need to be light acclimated.
I have 6x54W T5 supplemented by 2 Kessils A150. You transfer should be fine - they are hardy corals. |

As some have said great pics and coral selection, do you target feed the dendros and rhizo specially or just broadcast the tank?
