Majano removal question?

I got a couple of corals from a guy which came on a rock that also has a 3" maxima clam attached. However, it has a few majanos on it (like 40!!). What is the best way to remove these, assuming I can get the clam off the rock? I'd hate to have to toss a perfectly good clam.

Proteus 02-22-2013 11:58 AM

How bout a toothbrush and pail of water. I would try it then dip clam in clean water after to remove any "spores" from cleaning it

Aquattro 02-22-2013 12:28 PM

Thought about that, but I recall years ago trying to remove xenia that way, never worked :) Maybe scrape the shell area with an exacto blade?

Proteus 02-22-2013 12:51 PM

I had great luck with a needle and boiled vinegar though 40 is quite a bit

FishyFishy! 02-22-2013 01:12 PM

Yeah thats how I did them too. Needle and vinegar. Worked well, but then 40 is a lot. But hey, just sit down with some beers and getter duun!

Place empty clam or oyster shells on top of the nem, they will climb on top to get to the light. Toss out the shell.

with 40 of them? Pretty sure the clam would crawl out of it's shell to get that same light :)

Let's revamp this...free clam that needs some TLC -lol

That's just 40 on the clam. The rock probably has another 200 on it. If anyone locally has something that likes to eat these, let me know and you can have a rock :)

Sure, I'll take one tonight :)

pinkreef 02-22-2013 03:19 PM

I GOOGLED MAJANOS ONE DAY AND SAW BEFORE AND AFTER PICS OF
AN INFESTED ROCK. ALL THE MAJANOS MOVED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE
QUARANTEEN TANK AND THEN THE ROCK WAS REMOVED

Borderjumper 02-22-2013 04:57 PM

But when majanos move do they leave little smudges of themselves as Aptasia and mushrooms do?

Aquattro 02-22-2013 05:03 PM

Clam has a new home with a filefish that should enjoy a good lunch!

mrhasan 02-22-2013 05:18 PM

I don't know how effective it will be with so many but putting superglue on them sure can stuck their life

Unless I fill a bucket with glue and dunk it, that wouldn't work :)

I was thinking about saying that too but that would really be a sticky situation and you will possibly need 500ml of glue

No problem! It's been a while since I've been on here

Kevotron 02-23-2013 04:53 AM

I just turn off all my pumps and inject some kalk paste on the majano....

asylumdown 02-23-2013 09:12 PM

I'm with Brad. All of that sounded like tooooo much work for a clam. If it were me, you'd have all shortly been regaled with stories of how tridacnid clams taste with lots of butter and touch of garlic.

Aquattro 02-23-2013 09:34 PM

Clam and rock now en route to new home :)

asylumdown 02-24-2013 03:53 AM

PoonTang 02-24-2013 06:14 AM

Christy loves mojanos. She has a whole tank full of them just to prove it.

nope, they're one of the most boring fish ever, second only to the pyjama (sp?) cardinalfish, who at least breed every 2 weeks so thats interesting (although I never see anything).
