Show me the craziest SPS you've ever seen!

I'm on a hunt (albeit a very slow one) for incredible SPS. I'm trying to track down SPS that are just totally out there and completely different (like the Reef Raft Avenger. I don't care if it's a named coral or not, just needs to be out of the ordinary. And I don't consider red planet out of the ordinary... Ever since my neighbor's dog got one I've considered them common (but still very pretty).

And better yet, if you own said coral, PM me and let's talk.

But for now, let's have a show and tell of the most insane SPS you've ever seen!

reefermadness 10-10-2012 05:48 PM

My northern delight is pretty original. Green pigment streaks through it as well.

I am into multi-color SPS. The following picture was from an online Canadian store. It was in one of their shipments a while ago. I haven't seen it again. Still searching for one that is close to that color(s).

reefermadness 10-10-2012 06:36 PM

I hate to pop bubbles but the colour isnt that accurate on that picture. Also a.abrotanoides are especially known to be incredibly hard to keep long term. They do come in regularly in maricultured shipments though.

DAVE 10-10-2012 06:43 PM

I got that piece from Burc and it was not even close to that colour.

It is all green now, and I still have it.

...that was my last transaction with him

no bubbles burst, LOL :)
When I order corals from an online store, I don't usually have high hope of WYSIWYG due to various reasons.

ScubaSteve 10-10-2012 07:12 PM

This would be a fun one....

Nah, the polyps are the right color, and other stuff I've seen looks crazy like this too, so I'm hopeful.

DAVE 10-10-2012 08:46 PM

The question is whether it will hold its colour.

I have 14 of those frags, will see what they look like when I get home.

Ya, that's always the question :) Under my Radiums I would be more confident, but the LEDs, not so sure...

Agreed. The good thing is Jay keeps the nice ones under MH/VHO so you have a better chance.

These are wild pieces that haven't been around too long, so I am always a bit skeptical.

Too me its worth the risk. There stuff is too amazing not to try :)

You sure? It looks a lot like the Pink Floyd I've seen in a few other tanks.

I agree it does look tweaked, I couldn't find a more neutral picture of it.

...it is awfully purrrrrrrty

Who's tank have you seen it in?

I'm pretty sure.....ask Jay though.

I think Darryl is right

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/26422390/Pink%20Floyd.jpg

This for sure is the Pink Floyd and the polyps actually look PINK. (much lighter yellow as well)...tough to say though...it could be the same coral just a white balance issue (the contrast seems really dark on it).

ScubaSteve 10-10-2012 11:09 PM

Ya, to me that looks like the same coral just lighter either from white balance or higher light. Either way, it's the same species from what I can tell.

I've actually been sitting all weekend comparing these reef raft pics with some of the pics of the frags that are available throught he reef raft group order. Some of them look SO close to the ReefRaftUSA corals, but the pictures we were sent suck a bit so it's a bit tough to tell.

reefermadness 10-10-2012 11:27 PM

I'll put it this way...all the pics (even rrusa) are taken by Jay in canada. If they were the same...he would have gave you the same pic and told you the name. At least that only makes sense to me.

wickedfrags 10-10-2012 11:44 PM

it is not, they have gotten in about 4 of these colonies the last 4-5 months

When I was in TO in the summer for a conference I made the trek out to Jay's and while there I met a dude from TO (I think his name was Chris? Rich young guy, wore a suit, lived downtown near the waterfront). He gave me a ride back to TO to save me from having to take the bus back. We stopped at his place to check out his tank and he had it there (at least that's what he said it was). Looked very similar to the pic Titus99 posted. From the amount of cash this guy had thrown into this tank I wouldn't have doubted him it it was actually a Pink Floyd and he had dropped a stupid amount for it. His looked darker yellow and the polyps looked dark pink, not the light pink we see in the reefraft pic.

Either way it's still a nice coral. Looks the same to me really (in fact I think the knock off might look better with the deeper colours) and I'm not too concerned with lineage. Just care if it looks nice!

Reefer and Hydrologist: I was hoping you guys would just into this thread. I think the two of you have my two favourite SPS tanks in Canada. More pics?

Dave, the LED are ok, in that they retained most of my coral's colors. Some went downhill...my efflo which was purple on green is now grey on grey. My pink and blue milli is now my nice blue milli. A couple others lost a bit of bang, although I just nuked my tank with pesticides, so not a good week to be judging colors -lol
Overall, if you have Radiums and no GOOD (cost, evaporation, etc) reason to switch them out, I'd stick with them.

...Did anyone say ULTRA LORD ACANS?

cyberdude47 10-11-2012 01:43 AM

Not sure what you are after by means of crazy, but when I had my 500 gal my red Capricornus reached a size of 29" across and then i had to continuously trim it back, And I planted a green one in the middle and it started growing colored layers as I placed another red piece in the center of the green. Looked pretty neat until I had a mishap which cost me all if my SPS

Ya, I love big caps. I had a massive electric green one until I had a crash:sad:

By crazy, I'm looking for the most unusual, intensely coloured, unique corals

wickedfrags 10-11-2012 11:53 AM

agreed.....my final decision on the Illumina 260 I am running will be in by xmas I suspect...I recently added 3 UV modules, and am going to get either 2 more UV or 2 blue...........I have some nice SPS now and have my alk under control with a doser.....time will tell

My final decision was in in 3 weeks. I had to go LED for evaporation reasons, so gotta live with it, but I miss my Radiums :) The vertex may offer better quality light, so hopefully you get different results.
I've got my alk a bit low too, so I'm trying to bump that a bit, but that still won't bring back the lost colors, just a bit of the pop.

Dez 10-11-2012 01:58 PM

Agree with Brad. Halides are still the bomb, but LEDs offer way more positives for that tiny bit of personal preference of halides
