Well don't this take the cake. Grrr!

I have joined the ranks of those who are spammed ....

... on my PHONE!!!

Thank you Telus, for making it FREE for anyone to send me messages from anywhere, but making me PAY to RECEIVE this crap!

Bloody outrageous!

Bob I 04-16-2004 02:22 AM

Clarify please.

Text messaging on his cell phone

Quinn 04-16-2004 02:43 AM

I haven't started getting the phone spam yet but it doesn't suprise me at all. Any digital medium, really... I wonder if Telus is being payed off or if it's true spam?

On that note, I'm considering moving from Pay and Talk to a plan. Will probably switch to Bell as well, they seem to have some good deals on right now.

Jason McK 04-16-2004 02:43 AM

From what I understand Telus trys to block that stuff (cough cough)
and if you report it they will attempt to block it.

It's worth a try anyway, Plus I think they will remove any charges

Jason

LostMind 04-16-2004 03:23 AM

Actually, Telus wont refund the charges. And when my friend complained, they told him to shove it (possibly a bit more politely tho :)

I find it humourous that soon as telus implemented their anti-spam software for dsl, people starting getting spam UNLESS they had the telus anti spam software in place... Kinda fishy....

Quinn 04-16-2004 03:30 AM

Doesn't surprise me. As I recall, AOL got nailed with similar accusations a few years ago (luckily that particular ISP seems to have essentially died anyway). Canada needs to hurry the heck up and get some serious anti-spam legislation in. It's costing us way too much.

actualy they will, if they get rude, or you just are not getting anywhere, ask for there name/employ number, then ask to talk to the supervisor. if they got rude when you called explain that you don't appreciate being talked to rudely and what the problem is and what you want them to do.

I had to do this after getting nowhere with them over roaming charges from the US which were from me calling from Victoria to Victoria. also I have a few friends that have had to do this all with success.

I'll give Telus a call and see what they say about this...

I have yet to use the text messaging feature ... I was shocked when I saw how easy it is to send a text message to a Telus subscriber (http://www.telusmobility.com/sendame...amessage.shtml) and that anybody with web access can do it for free... If this trend continues I will drop the subscription to the text messaging without hesitation. It's not like I use the feature. What's worse, the one time I tried to send a message from my phone, it didn't work! That figures.

On the other hand, maybe I should call that number to claim my Carribbean cruise .... does it come with any free Viagra too??

LostMind 04-16-2004 06:21 AM

Hmmm. TXT messaging is good. I rely on it a lot.

As for viagra... man, honestly, I must get over 200 spams per day about viagra. I am 26 people! I DONT NEED NO STINKING VIAGRA!

hehehe.

Quinn 04-16-2004 06:30 AM

I was talking to a friend today who works at WirelessWave and asked who on Earth buys a Fido phone in Alberta (their coverage area is Calgary, Edmonton, and within ten miles of highway 2 between those cities). He said a lot of immigrants use them because of the free text messaging, which allows them to keep in contact with family overseas.

When I signed up for it, I anticipated that I would eventually probably use it. ... it seems like a potentially useful feature ...

Who do you use? Telus or Bell or ... ?? Do you get these text spam messages too?

I guess it's not so much the fact that "just anyone" can send me a message for free, that bothers me, it's the fact that "just anyone" can do it "free and anonymously." There's got to be a better way of audit trailing these things.

Son Of Skyline 04-16-2004 03:55 PM

Man, I've never heard of spamming on your cell phone before but apparently it's more common than not.

I guess that's the one good thing about being on Rogers. Actually it may be the only thing good about being on Rogers

christyf5 04-16-2004 04:42 PM

But what about those Rogers text messages that they send out all the time. The ones that say they have "free" ringtones and graphics for you to download or contests to enter. Do we pay for that crap?? I never even thought about it.

I haven't gotten any messages from Rogers in a long time, but I was told once (forgot who) that Rogers messages are not charged. I know it's also free to call Rogers on your Rogers cell phone.

LostMind 04-16-2004 06:15 PM

I use rogers now too.

I get spammed on it occassionally. But I dont care too much since my package gives a lot of sms anyways (biz package).

Quinn 04-16-2004 06:18 PM

Does anyone use Bell? Any thoughts on them as a provider?

Beverly 04-16-2004 09:50 PM

DH works for Telus in the IT department, which has nothing to do with spam or cell phones. Anyway, showed him this thread and he says he will post it on Telus' internal Q&A/Customer Complaints department. Hopefully he will get an answer next week and I will post what they say.

I doubt that going to a different provider will solve the problem of cell phone spam. Spam is spam is SPAM!!!!! I get 5 times as much spam as regular mail on my PC and irritating is the nicest word there is for how I feel about this menace. But cell phone spam, that's the freaking lowest they can go, isn't it

Delphinus 04-16-2004 10:16 PM

True, spam is spam, spam email is annoying too, but, at the end of the day at least I don't pay a "per email" cost for my internet so it's somewhat less intrusive than this phone spam.

If this is going to become a bigger problem as time goes on then they need to almost institute some kind of collect call mechanism for text messages. "You have received a message from <blah blah blah>; do you accept?" Then at least I have SOME say in the matter. I don't know, maybe that wouldn't work either.

One of my coworkers got the same spam on his phone yesterday too, so, I wonder if this is not an isolated incident. I haven't had a chance to call telus yet ... hmmm I should go do that right now actually ..

Delphinus 04-16-2004 10:38 PM

"If you are calling in regards to a text message indicating you have won a contest; please be advised that this is a hoax. There is no contest."

(really ... you don't say.)

...

After on hold for a while I've gotten through to a rep. He said he'd credit my account. Which leads me to suspect if I hadn't called, the messages (I received it twice) would still appear on my bill otherwise. Not that we're talking about a huge sum of money here, but ... I guess it's just the principle of the thing at this point. I wonder how many people WON'T call to complain ...

So anyhoo ... I think it was Jason and Steve who said to call and complain and Telus would reverse the charges ... you were right. Thanks for the tip. Sounds like they're gonna have to work on their spam filters a bit...

Quinn 04-16-2004 10:58 PM

Tony are you telling me that all those sites telling me I was the one-millionth visitor, it's a big joke? Man and I thought I was extremely lucky.

You'd think in a society as cynical as ours people would be beyond falling for this type of advertising. Obviously there are still some really dumb people out there eh. And the rest of us have to suffer.

LostMind 04-16-2004 11:07 PM

glad you got the charges reversed! :)

Buccaneer 04-17-2004 03:25 AM

Tony .. I got the same spam the night you received it ... I never signed up for text but it must be part of a bundle that I have ... will be calling them to remove it as I dont use text anyway

Canadian Man 04-17-2004 05:59 AM

Now I know why I don't own a cell phone and wont as long as I can. I'll be like one of those old folks with the rotary phones. BOB?

Katie(my wife) has a new bell phone and she just got some phone spam the other night. Also a fellow at my work got it too....
Looks like all you folks are the lucky few to win a trip to the Caribbean.
