Anyone know what this is?

It was on the side of one of my clams..
There are also a ton of little snails on it too as you can see.

Pyramid snails. Bad news for your clams.

Borderjumper 08-26-2012 06:24 PM

It's a chiton and it won't bother anything. Those Pyramid Snails on the other hand will eat your clam and kill it.

SeaHorse_Fanatic 08-26-2012 06:25 PM

The flat thing is a chiton I believe. Looks like a wood louse bug.

Generally eats algae.

jagermaier 08-26-2012 06:25 PM

Looks like a Chiton...it's a marine mollucs.

marie 08-26-2012 06:26 PM

I assume you are asking about the chiton? They are harmless coralline algae eaters
Other then that I see what appears to be a pest anemone and parasitic snails

Ryan-b 08-26-2012 06:27 PM

Not sure about the one in the pic, but those are pyramid snails and not good when it comes to clams.

Agreed. The Pyramidellid snails will also attack larger snails, particularly Turbos and Astraea.

Here's some help: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-02/nftt/index.php

reefwars 08-26-2012 06:29 PM

dude get those snails out asap they will kill your clam in no time very bad to have.

ashr 08-26-2012 06:48 PM

wow thanks all. How should I kill them? remove clam and clean it off in a bucket of salt water?

Borderjumper 08-26-2012 06:51 PM

Yah, you can clean it with a soft toothbrush. keep an eye on it tho. Those snails will be in the sand or rock around the clam, so more thn likely you will have to clean it a couple of times.

ashr 08-26-2012 07:17 PM

Great, thanks for the help! Im doing it now!

ashr 08-26-2012 07:55 PM

Well he is all clean now.. I couldnt beleive how many of those snails where on it..wow. I bet it feels soo much better haha.

I alos scooped a lot of sand under the clam and through it away.

Ill keep on it if anymore show up for the next while.

Borderjumper 08-26-2012 09:21 PM
